Okay, well not really, but the starter mounting bolts loosening seems to be an issue especially if you have the DB high torque (not so great) starter. I'm pretty sure everyone knows of my issues with the starter and that is for another time. Anyway, my starter made a funny noise, so I looked under the truck and the starter was hanging by the wires. Somehow the bolts backed out. I torqued them properly to being with. I replaced the starter bolt again, torqued it down, and same thing happened, only this time the threads got damaged because the bolt must have loosened and when I started the truck, the threads were 'screwed'. Went to get a helicoil kit, to the tune of $75 plus the drill bit, and another $45 for a 90* right angle drill attachment as there is no room for a drill under there, and went to work. Long story short, the helicoil worked great, and so far the starter hasn't fallen out again, although it hasnt' been in long at all.
Condensed version: Check your starter bolts, especially if you have the DB high torque starter. If they come loose, you may damage the threads in the adapter and have to retap and helicoil the holes...
I wonder is star washers would help out in this situation? I worked on a machine that had pnuematic vibrators on it to help move the product down the line and they were the only thing that worked so the bolts wouldn't loosten up.
I used to have a 4x4 Ranger that had this problem. I constantly had to monitor the starter bolts or they would back loose and the starter would hang. That truck also had an issue where the ignition rotor would come loose under the distributor cap, causing the cap to shatter.
the BD starter is not a bad starter..it has to do with the installer...lock tite should always be used on any starter..the high TQ starter needs it the most..when you hit the key that sucker is dong some work and it will loosen the bolts if you dont use lock tite...... much like the u-joint straps on the drive shaft..they should always have lock tite on them as well with all the TQ the drive shaft will see..
