Our 1985 BII left my wife stranded 30 miles away at Lake Tahoe. We figured out it was the starter, as the starter spun, but no engine turn over. Figured we needed a new starter. Upon arriving to start the fix, we found the top bolt was gone and the bottom bolt really loose. It couldn't engage the flywheel. Tightened the bottom bolt and drove home. I put lock washers on the old, and new replacement bolts. You might do a quick check on the starter bolts if you're under the rig for an oil change. Might save a headache.
Might be a good ide to check ALL the MAJOR bolts..starter, motor mounts...etc..I purchased a 86 BII a month ago and had to do some trans/motor work on it. I found that ALL the transmission bell house bolts were loose and able to be turned by hand and also the MOTOR MOUNT BOLTS were loose and able to be turned by hand. Neither of the bolts had ever been loosened before. I guess after all them years they loosend up.
when my starter was replaced, the top bolt was completely stripped... dont know if that could have been caused by it being loose or not, but I dont think it could have helped.
yea try this one, my starter finally gave up, and when I removed it you couldn't have turned it with a pipe wrench, the thing was totally clogged front to rear with sand and dirt. I think there was more mud in it than steel. I mean every nook and cranny inside that starter was packed. I have no idea how it worked as long as it did, new starter and she fired right up.
Had this happen before on a Ford wagon with 400 cu in engine. I now use a dab of lock tight and put a dab of JB Weld on the bolt head or nut on all my cars starters. The one on the wagon came loose at S ears while my wife was shopping. It was the original starter so I told her to let Sears repair it. I normally do all my own work. It costs over $150.00 for a $40.00 starter.
