I installed a new rebuilt starter on my 360 ...it sounded like a old Dodge starter winding down after it would start. Now after a week it sounds like it doesn't fully engage about 50% of the time. It sounds like the teeth are grinding against the teeth on the flexplate. When I put the starter, the instructions said to use new grade 8 3/8-16 bolts. The bolt holes in the starter are big enough to accept 3/8 bolts . The problem is my truck came out with 5/16-18 starter bolts so, I have quite a bit of clearence in the bolt holes. The bolts do not serve as any alignment feature . Is this normal for the starter to free float and can be tightened down anywhere?
Well, problem solved. When I removed the starter so I could return it , I noticed it had a rattle in it that it's not suppose to have. The pin that the bendix pivots on had broke loose and fell out of place. So the engagement with the flexplate was *****-nilly . Sometimes fully engaged and starting ok , sometimes partially engaged and grinding . New starter solved the problem. Thanks.
