My 06 had always started very easily in the cold weather. The past 2 weeks I've had to crank it over quite a while before it would start, and it hasn't been really cold yet. It's cranking strong so I don't think the batteries are weak, they are the original batteries as the truck only has 38k on it. Any ideas? I was going to fill it up with some fresh diesel this evening.
The batteries and charging system are the first place I'd start to check. It can seem to crank strong but you might not notice that it gets infinitesimally slower and slower over time. Also check the FICM voltage (tech folder for procedure) just for a baseline. Mileage has nothing to do with batteries and yours are 5 years old now.
Ok, I replaced both batteries and that didn't seem to solve the problem. I checked the voltage on the FICM and the lowest it read was 48.2 so that leaves me a bit more confused. Its supposed to get very cold on Tuesday, I will see how easily it starts then. I straight piped my truck this summer (CAT still intact). Would that effect cold weather starts?
I have the same issues with my 05. At first I suspected the fuel filter which was from Napa so I replaced with MotorCraft - no change. I have new glow plugs and have had the Dealer check all injectors etc.. All is well except the slow starting, it fires but takes a long time to get it running even at 30 degrees. I keep hearing about the fuel pump and probably should check that next. Good luck - its frustrating knowing its going to get very cold next week. I'll have to keep it plugged in.
