Awesome write-up. I've always used POR-15 but was wondering about the others your testing. I saved your blog so I can see what happens in the next experiment.

Oh yeah, I also fixed your link so it works.
Thanks Carlene!!!
When I post that long-term test I will also post a bunch of shots from parts I've used POR15 on over the years. I've been collecting them as I see them in shows, or if they come back for other work.
While those post is old, according to the blog it could soon be ready to see the results of the outdoor tests?
I have tested the por-15 myself on an old 6 foot long pry bar. I left it in the yard where when it rained it would be under water. It did very well to the test and iI did the hammer test on it as well. I only did one end of the pipe so that if the rust from the untreated end creeped under the por-15 it would be easy to detect. (i had heard this was an issue with others). I never saw the creep or any surface rust at all. I did see the oxidation though from being in the sun (no secret there). This test went on for 3 years before I accidentally left it when I moved.
I believe very much in the por-15 , but I wanted to see other's results with cheaper products because I didn't like shelling out the price of the por-15. From my test and yours it looks like the price is worth it.
Digging into this very forum we'll see a few POR-15 detractors which is par for the course I'm sure. Having already used it my initial impressions were "Wow--this stuff is tuff!"
Yes its a bit more initially costly but when we're talking about a one-time forever sorta product why is that even a consideration? Not sure about others but something as important as controlling rust is concerned I want to do the job one time, not several because I found something cheaper.
My guess is anyone experiencing problems with POR-15 would find its either: bad product (highly unlikely) OR improper preparation and application. Having once owned a body shop in the mid/late 80's I know full well regardless the cost of materials improper use renders them pretty much useless for the longer term.
The linked blog is indeed excellent and I too look forward to updates!
That would be very disappointing though---I have some POR-15 still stuck to my concrete driveway almost two full years after dripping. Talk about extreme exposure to the elements huh? Personally I've not seen or read too many similar experiences with post-application peeling and flaking off.
Could be you did receive a bad product batch. POR-15 advised me their products should be good at least 2 years after production, assuming it's unopened during that time.
There shouldn't be much if any difference in the colors although I opted for the silver because: a) it would be an under coat & b) the solid content is massive.
Hope your next application goes a lot better---maybe next time buy directly from POR-15?
Do any of you have any input on Magnet Paints Chassis Saver? I have head a lot of good about them and was wondering how it was in comparison to POR 15
I cannot compare the two of them, but I do have experience with Chassis Saver. I used it on some parts of my truck 2-3 years ago and it seems to be holding up well.

Thanks.. I have heard good things about Chassis Saver all 3rd party though. Glad to hear 1st person that it holds up.
