That is very different from what mine had. Mine was a simple piece of tubing that went across the front lower portion of the crossmember, did a 180, and went right back where it came from. Also appears to be a bit larger diameter tubing than what was under my truck......
FWIW mine is a 1981 F350 with a 400/T18 4x4 combo.
Since Chris posted a pic of the PS Cooler lines, here's what I have in my F150.
That's almost exactly what mine looked like, but I think it went a little further across the crossmember before turning around. It kinda threw me for a loop when the PS sprung a leak, and the fluid was pouring off the passenger side of the crossmember.......
The 180 bend got pushed back against the crossmember, eventually rubbing a hole thru the tubing.
OK, did a bit of investigating in the parts book....
I found pictures of what I as well as Shaun have (didn't run across anything that looked like RW's description) and was noticing things like "WITH TRAILER TOW" and "WITHOUT A/C" and the like:
I then looked in the Text section (which gives me the part numbers as they apply to the different vehicles) to try and make easy sense of what was installed where and when, and, well, OMG, I don't want to study that much....
Year & Applications (which vehicles with which configurations) are in the two LH columns; Part Numbers, Descriptions and Quantity Used are in the RH columns.
In general,
Group 3A713 is the low-pressure return line with cooler
Group 3A719 is the high-pressure line
Odd indeed. I am almost certain my original return hose looked like a cross between the 2 shown in the diagrams. Sort of like the "w/ps cooler", except it didn't make the 2 pass (upper section).

Here is what the book says for 1980-86 with the 4.9L 6-banger in pickups & Broncos:

I dunno. I'm used to not finding the *correct* listing for underhood parts. I have to buy alt/ac belts by giving them the number, since no one lists the right size (dealer added ac), and the rest of the belts/hoses can be looked up using the non-ac listings.
The alt/ac uses a dual belt setup that goes cs, alt, ac, wp, but I have yet to find any listing in a parts book to match.
I also have the small non-ac radiator, which makes it "entertaining" to run the ac in summer traffic....... Oh the joys of old trucks, LOL.
Again, learned something new. Every truck I have ever messed with had the large cooler line thing on it. Never knew they had that smaller version. Thanks for the info.
