I have a 99 F250. THe selector for changing air flow from dash to vent to floor isn't working. Only blows on windshield. You can hear a small click sound when you move selector.
There is a small pump? under hood passenger side right near fan motor. Is this how vacuum is supplied to help change the door in the system?
If so should it be running quiet or can it be heard with the hood closed??
Heat and A/C works fine. Just can't change the flow.
Looking for some advice/help.
What engine do you have? If it is the diesel, then that is a vacuum pump on the passenger side fender. With the key on, disconnect the vacuum hose and the pump should run. Put your finger over the nipple and it should stop. If it doesn't do that, make sure there is power to the connector. If there is, the pump needs replaced.
If the pump is working, then you need to trace down the vacuum lines looking for a leak.
I have a 2003 diesel and in my case it was NOT the vacuum pump. It was the selector valve mounted on the fender well right behind the vacuum pump. Most guys I've talked to have had the problem be the vacuum pump...just be aware there's another possibility.
The pump is running as soon as you turn the key. But it is very noisy. You can heard it with the hood closed. I don't recall it making noise before, but then again it may have and i didn't notice.
In my case, I started the truck and then we pulled one end of the line off of the vacuum pump and I plugged it with my finger. It took a while but the pump finally pulled down enough to shut off. Since the pump stayed off, I knew the vacuum pump was working so I put it back together and kept tracing the vacuum lines to try and isolate where the leak was.
I did find one of the lines was crushed...but since they're plastic it was easy to replace.
I also learned that when my friendly neighborhood Sams Club installed the new batteries I bought there, it looks like they were the culpits on the crushed vacuum line that I had to replace. It's a tight squeeze to install the battery and I guess they didn't notice the vacuum line they crushed.
