Mine runs for about 5 seconds. Can't hear it from the cab when the engine is running. Pull the line off the pump and put your finger over the inlet. If it doesn't stop the pump is bad. If it does then you have a vacum leak.
Just a bet but I have seen it 100 times in my neck of the woods. Has happened to me twice. The vacuum pumps are pretty healthy on these things. My company jeep is in the shop getting a new wiring harness that just got ate by a rat. This is the time of the year for it.

cak's on the opposite end of the country! Not arguing but he needs to test it before chasing his tail.
I pulled all the hoses off one at a time except for the one that comes straight off the front of the pump and seems to be a hard plastic hose. That one didnt want to come off and I was afraid I was going to break the fittings. Plugged both the hose and the port on the pump and it wont shut off. Dont seem to have any suction on any of them. I am assuming that the pump must be shot.
Did you also check the vacuum line going to the heater hose control valve just above the passenger side valve cover, although I think you should be able to feel some kind of vacuum directly at the pump or reservoir. Again, a vacuum gauge is your friend (and one helluva carb. tuning tool if you're good).
One of these days I am going to have to get a tutorial on adding pictures and such but on this thread by Beachbumcook with a vacuum problem is a pretty good picture of the area. The connection you are concerned with is the bottom center coming off the pump going to the rubber elbow to the poly U shaped going to the vacuum reservoir. Pull the rubber elbow off at the pump and put you finger over the pump port of course with the key on and pump running. The pump should shut off immediately if not its the pump that is the concern. If it does shut off let us know I can or others can run you though some trouble shooting. Vacuum pumps usually die from over work caused by leaks down stream or sometimes electrically via the pressure switch causing it not to shut off. I think these thing are supposed to satisfy somewhere between 15 and 18. Do what I suggested above and see what the outcome is.
