So, the existing circuit for the backup lights is able to handle an extra 5 amps?
If you use a relay, you will have no problem.
Splicing to the reverse wire only trips the relay ON, the power to the lights
Comes from another source, say the battery.
I have lights on our 07 Explorer and never had any problems with the set up.
Place the relay and connections behind a taillight for easy, dry installation.
Since it's a pair of lights, I think they would actually be drawing an additional 8.4 Amps.
It wouldn't matter what Amps they are drawing if you hook them up with a relay as described.the relay takes the load not the factory reverse lights sys.

Yea, the relay would be best but it sounds like a single light or a pair of LED lights would work wired straight.
In my case, and food for thought for y'all, might want to add a switch to disable the lights. If you have a trailer in tow you are likely to blind yourself with nice bright lights hitting the front of your trailer.
INSTALLATION OF ADDITIONAL REVERSE LAMPS
In 2011MY Super Duty vehicles, the reverse lamp circuit is monitored for over-current conditions. If the Body
Control Module (BCM) detects current draw that exceeds design parameters, it will trigger a Diagnostic Trouble
Code (DTC) and disable the reverse lamp circuit.
When installing additional reverse lamps you may encounter this situation. To remedy this, use the trailer tow wiring
reverse lamp circuit (CAT16, gray with brown stripe) found in the blunt cut wires at the end of frame. If your vehicle
is equipped with the trailer tow connector, the reverse lamp circuit (CAT16, gray with brown stripe) is found on pin 7
of the 7-way connector.
Alternately a relay may be installed to provide power to additional reverse lamps or LED-style reverse lamps may be
used provided they do not trigger a DTC.
