Well, I put 3M 20% tint on my side windows and it is now getting dark around 5:30 pm. Add a narrow drive-way and I cannot see what is behind me. I do have the back-up sensors, but I need some back-up lights. I would like the style that are premanently mounted. What are the ones of choice? Price? And, last but not least, how hard is the installation?
I've also considered increasing rearward lighting. I may go the route of installing some small generic (non-halogen ... low amperage/wattage) headlight-style lamps to the outer edges of the hitch receiver. Will come in handy when hitching up the trailer after sunset.
There are lights that go right into the receiver hitch. They plug in and are twin 55 halogen lights. I know mrrottndog has them but couldn't find out the name brand in his gallery.
Maybe he or someone else who has them will chime in.
There called White Knights backup lighting. They have 2/55w halogen fixtures and produce 130,000 candle power. You have a choice of fixed mount or hitch mount. Some req. a install. kit. Stylin Concepts has them for $79.95.
I`ve got them on mine and love them. Really floods the area behined you. Mr.Rottendog had them on his till somebody that was detailing his X used them for a step.
Yeah, People kept using them as a step. This blocker bar now occupies the hitch and I have mounted a pair of small oval 55W backup lights under the bumper.
I had the white knight permant mount lights on my truck , and they lasted about two weeks before they got destroyed. Here are the negative sides.....
1.When they are mounted , it is next to impossibile to get the reciever lock in and out.
2.People use them as a step , especially car wash guys and friends that dont know they are their.
3.Very poor and "cheap" design, very cheesy plastic
4.Had to tow strap my buddy out of a ditch and basically "exploded" the entire housing. Covers the holes on each side of the reciever unsed for safety chains, weight dist. setups.
I replaced the stock reverse bulbs with higher wattage units , and mounted two PIAA Superbright off-road foglights to each side of my Hitch. Mounted them just under the bumper on a slight angle towards the ground.Just drilled a 1/2 inch hole and wired them up to a switch so I can have them on even when the truck is off..
Now people are certain when I am backing up , plus the extra light helps when hooking up the trailer at night..
Thanks to all who replied. I think I'll go with the 50 watt bulbs in the taillights as a start.
I do need something durable. Twin boys are "hard on equipment," basketballs, etc. MrRottndog, I love seeing pictures of your X, can never get enough. JoeBoost, any pictures of your set-up? Sounds like what I need. Maybe I'll have to put them on my Christmas list.
I too have been wanting to install some back up lights, but don't want a seperate switch to deal with. Is there some way to tie them into the reverse lights so that when I engage reverse, they all come on? I am not that savvy on electrical. Seems that the tap into the current reverse light wires would not support the draw for the new lights?
Originally posted by Forest Sorry, I missed the discussion about where to buy the 55W bulbs to put into stock taillight assemblies---where do you get these?

They will support it...
I have both the 55 watt upgraded bulbs in the stock location and two 55 W low profile reverse lamps spliced into it without any hint of a problem...
Try Academy in the boating section, they have 55watt x2 reverceing lights for around 25$ they are not fancey, they are rectangular in shap and mount under thee bumper presumably in the tow hitch area, and they do the job!
