mercon or type f

So to start out with i base this on a automatic transmission and a powershift transmission (like in tractors and heavy equipment) are basicly the same but auto (like its name implies) it upshifts own its own. That being said We run John deere hy-gard (j20c) type oil in our john deere transmissions. and in our cats we run a T04 spec TDTO (Transmission DriveTrain Oil) Both oils we buy in bulk for our Phillips 66 supplier. they are equivilents of the manufacturer oil. We use these because the T04 spec. and the J20C spec have friction modifiers in them for the wet clutch packs in Powershifts. So with all that said I now under stand that regular mercron atf does not have friction modifiers in it but type f atf does. but type f is for older transmissions. I understand that friction modifiers help the clutch packs engage and not slip. if they slip to much they burn up. So if i have a auto in a heavy duty application what would be wrong with running the John deere or Cat oil in it. I know thats alot but i've been thinking about it alot.

I would stay with mercon, you know for sure it works, you can check the specs on the oil, but I doubt they are even close.

i have heard of people running type F in a mercon tranny with the intent of extending the life of worn out clutch packs, and getting some success from it, and IMHO its ok to do so. but the tractor oils are likely of a higher viscosity and different enough to not function well in a mercon tranny.
that said, if you have a tranny you'd be willing to sacrifice to research, i guess you could try it, just be sure that you don't end up screwed if it quits

I would be using the low viscosity version of john deere hygard. regular hy gard is iso 46 low visc is closer iso 10 or 20. I'm going use it in basicly a play truck it will have a C6 in it. I will probalby use it to pull firewood out. and it won't have any tags on it. and i think that the specs. on the hygard and cat oil would be higher. i have always thought of atf as a cheap oil.

Not sure what the difference is between the two, but I tried using IH Hytrans in a C-4 auto years ago because the front seal was leaking and I could get it at work for free. The trans didn't make it long before it started slipping and required a complete rebuild. I would stick with a quality transmission fluid.
