Multi-grade Oil

I am planning to service my own transmission and I bought Mobil 1 synthetic multi-grade oil. I have heard that there might be problems with multi-grade oil. What are the problems I might have, if any? I have a 1997 E-350 van with an E40D transmission. Does anyone have any real-life experience with this situation?

Thanks in advance,
Jeff

What do you mean by multi grade oil? Are we talking about transmission fluid?

No, my apologies I meant a multi-vehicle formula, synthetic transmission fluid. On the bottle it says Dexron/Mercon Mercon V. This looks like good oil and the right oil for my vehicle. My vehicle takes the Mercon transmission fluid. My apoligies again and thanks for your answers.

I use Mobil 1 syn tranny fluid in my 94 F250 E4OD which I use to tow an 8,000# trailer thru nasty hills and hot temperatures. I started using M1 at about 80K Miles and now have 95K So far so good.

From reading on this website, it looks like the newest models that require Mercon V really do need V and the universal fluids are not the best choice but workable. The older models like your should be fine with the universal Mobil 1 fluids.

From what I recall the Mercon V is either semi or full syn and had additives required for the newest trannies from Ford. Ford has discontinues support for older Mercons and is pushing M V for all trannies needing Mercon. Don't know what this means for the aftermarket, whether they continue to make older Mercon types or just go with a Mercon V or do the universal fluid. I think the universal will be it for Dexron and Mercon trannies. These are just my guesses from reading.

GOod Luck,

Thanks...that's what I'm thinking...

i took her to JL (i know, i should be shot) and they said:

They should be using Heartland Automotive Products' T3 additive at our shops, but if they are using the lubeguard products still then the green bottle (the cap is green not the bottle) would be right.. A more technical name is Lubeguard Automatic Transmission Fluid Friction Modifier Mercon V Applications.
so, I'm debating if i drop the pan (needs filter change at 120k, she's at 92 now) and change the filter and just add some mercon V to top off or what!
