Well the door handle doesn't work on the inside with the handle so for the time being I took the panel off and just pull on the linkage from the inside. This makes me think that it is loose since pulling the linkage still opens the door but the handle doesn't. The problem is when I was putting the handle on I torqued one of the bolts to much and both threads broke off and it looks like the threads were part of the door itself so do I have to get a new door now??
Alternatively, use a threaded insert or "riv-nut" or "nut-sert". Basically, it's a threaded rivet. In California, visit Ace Hardware for an insert kit (like $8 IIRC).
