The short of it is a 3G swap is a 130 amp alt removed from a 96 mecury sable that takes very little to make work in our trucks. When done you will have better charging capacity on your truck as well as better power to operate existing lighting and some extra to run any additional lighting or power consuming devices such as big stereos. winches etc.
Ford tauras, mustang, sable, are the ones i know of right of hand.....give some of the guys time on here and they will be able to fill you in on exactly what years to use and what models you can get them from. In the mean time search 3G Upgrade in the seach feature at the top of the page and be prepared for alot of reading with some fantastic pics.

'just bumped to the top the mega-long 3g thread with potential donors for the new guys and gals.
3G is third generation alternators, as far as I know. 1G were the external regulated alternators from sometime in the 60's (not positive), 2G are the IAR:internal regulator from early 80's to mid 90's?
and the 3G is still in production today, I believe.
I think the 3G is the best, google it and figure it out. The cooling fan is inside the housing so it looks very tidy, without that damn external fan which gets sandblasted, and can crack.
The 3G is super easy to hook up, and outperforms them old chevy 1 wire alts.
The 3G has 2 models;
95amp 135mm diameter case. *4 holes(I will explain)
130 amp 148mm diameter case. *2 holes;
*The holes are cast into the front face of the alternator, between ribs, behind the pulley. Since there is no external fan, they can be seen easily.
i tried using the search engine in here.
3g = no reply to short.
3g instalation = everything intalled....
3g modification = everything modified.....
3g conversion = everyting converted.....
I asked Carquest for a 3G alternator for a 78 F100, the girl look at me like I had antenna.
what i am after is, what model and year to I give her, so i can buy an alternator that i can convert my truck, I will work out the pulley and bracket from the scrap yard..

There are 2G externally regulated alternators as well.
There are a total of 5 Ford alternators. 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G and 6G.
4G is usually for dual alternator set-ups, but is also found in many Powerstroke 7.3 applications. The 6G is mostly a Superduty alternator.
