I don't know if this is advised or not, but I forget where I saw on a tv show once, a guy pulled the diff cover off, filled a plastic bag with the gear oil, and placed the bag in the cover and bolted it back on, and when the gears moved they'd tear the bag open and the oil would obvioulsy come out. I don't know if this is advisable or not, im still a rookie, hahah, just a suggestion though.
I've heard of the plastic bag trick before. There was a good reason to do it, but I don't think there's a good reason to do it here.
When somebody mentioned replacing the diff cover and you replied that the diff cover wasn't the problem, did you consider that getting a new diff cover would give you a new drain plug and threaded hole for the drain plug? There are cheap chrome dress-up covers available from anywhere, or you could just junkyard a cover.
The speed sensor should come straight up; at worst, you may have to twist it a little to get it to start. Be careful with tools; it's just a small piece of plastic. But if you break it, a new one is about $11 from the dealer, so it's not the end of the world.
Sometimes the plastic bag also has a handfull of sawdust in it. It's amazing how quiet that makes the gears ... for a while, anyway. Another reason to pull the drain plug and check the fluid if you ever buy a used diff.
Well, guys thanks to ALL of your suggestions I finally got it filled with fluid. I got the speed sensor off with a little bit of prying with a flat head screwdriver!!! If it wasn't for your help I don't know what I would have done!! Thanks a BUNCH!!!!!!
Oh by the way, the reason I changed the oil was because, I just had that axle installed about 8 months ago. I bought it used from my local junkyard!!! Anyway, I wanted to make sure that they gave me an axle equipped with Trak-Lok. Which they did!! The oil in there was dark caramel color. Doesn't that mean that there is water in it?? Tomarrow I'm taking a ride over to that junkyard! I'm going to raise some $%&*! They told me they would put a new gasket and fluid in the Diff, before they install it. Of course they didn't!! I even bought the gasket and oil and brought it to them. I'm gonna make them give me a longer warranty now!
Did you add the friction modifier with the fluid? If not, you will ruin the Track-Lok in short order. If you don't know what I'm talking about, just say so and I'll explain.
Originally posted by bronco351 I didn't have to add it I paid a little extra for gear oil that has it mixed in already!!! Thanks though!
If you feel a shudder from the rear when making a tight corner, that's the clutches grabbing. In that case, add a little more modifier, do a figure 8 in a parking lot and it should clear up.
Oh by the way, incase anyone else has to fill it through the speed sensor hole, the differential takes 5.5 pints of fluid to fill it up. Which transfers into 2 full bottles, also to get the 1.5 I bought one of those measuring thing they use for mixing 2 stroke gas and it has a mark on it for 1.5 pints!! It's perfect. Hope this helps someone!!
