E4OD pan advice

I'm looking for a deep pan and was looking for any input, good or bad. I'm having a hard time paying four or five hundred bucks, so I'm looking for an affordable alternative. Has anyone used the Derale pan with the vents tubes in it? How about any other cast/finned pans? Maybe even a good used one if someone has one kicking around.....

Well that's interesting. It just seems the more fluid you can have the better, and any chance for added cooling would worth doing. I've looked in to a larger front cooler, and will pursue that as well. Thanks for the link!

Added cooling is good. A pan does NOT cool the ATF. Get a better cooler for that.
Have you looked where the pan is located? What's around it? The exhaust for one. How are you going to cool 200°F oil with a 1000°F exhaust pipe right there? Plus all the heat from the radiators up front go under the truck. The area around the pan is hot, so you can heat the ATF better with a big pan, but you're sure not going to cool it.

Why is more fluid always better?

Bottom line, it's your money, not mine. Buy what makes you happy.

I understand. I'll look around for a bigger cooler. Any tips on a brand that has the correct fittings already? I don't mind fabbing up a bracket. Also, I'd like to put a temp gauge in the truck, is there a good/bad place in the pan for the sender? Obviously not pointing down, but just anyplace it won't get in the way of anything? I'm really just looking to keep the trans in the truck working, and working well for as long as I can. How about fluid? I'm using Castrol now. I do appreciate you sharing your knowledge with me...or us here on the forum.

The best cooler you can get is one from a 6.0L truck. It will have 1/2" fittings, the lines in your truck are 5/16". You can get adapters at any hardware store.

The best place to put the sender is in the pressure test port on the driver's side of the transmission. It's just above the pan towards the front of the trans. It has a pipe plug in that port from the factory.

In my opinion the best ATF for your trans is Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. Any ATF that has a MERCON V rating will work fine.

Awesome info, thank you very much for all of it. So, when changing fluid, it's okay to drain the converter and the pan, and just add the synthetic? I'm all for changing to the Mobil 1, just want to do it correctly. It has about a hundred and twenty thousand on it. And i'm sure you anticipated this question, how about any of the shift enhancer kits? It seems to be a little soft on the shifting now, even when you put it in drive, it doesn't feel firm like it used to. if that makes sense. I'll work on getting a cooler.

I don't know any of the shift enhancer kits. Never used one.
You can change the ATF by draining the pan and torque converter or using this method: Changing ATF Fluid in a E4OD and 4R100 transmission .: Articles

You can change to synthetic with no problem.

Great article, thanks! I'm gonna start collecting all the parts and try and do that in the next week or two. You said the cooler from a 6.0 truck....are there any years that are better than others? I remember something about 1990? I'll check with our radiator supplier today and see if I can get a new one.

6.0L trucks were built from 2003-2007. '03-'04 had a larger cooler, but the '05-'07 were more efficient, so either one will cool the same.

Goodness....these carry a rather high price tag. I may have to look at other options. I'm a bit nervous of a used one, and new, even with my discount, they are still over three hundred bucks aftermarket. I'm gonna eye up my truck tonight, and see what options there are. Maybe a 15 or 18 row engine oil cooler type instead?

So which of these would be the best choice???

: Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF, Mobil Multi-Vehicle ATF and Mobil ATF D/M.

Mobil 1 synthetic ATF is the best ATF out there in my opinion.

So the test port is on the left side of the trans, towards the front and is on, or just above the pan rail? It does look small, and it does have a plug in it. I'm going to order up a gauge this week, and I may get a stacked cooler, much like what it has now, only twice as big, and put Mobil 1 in it. I do truly appreciate all your help and advice.

Yes, that's it. The thread is 1/8" NPT dryseal which is what almost every temp gauge sending unit has.
