1998 E-350 7.3L Oil Change question

I am about to change the oil in my 98 E350.

I have two gallons of Castrol 15-40, a gallon of Valvoline, and a gallon of Lucas Oil Stabilizer. I use Lucas in my Chevy 350 powered fj40 and it runs like a top. I assume it is safe to use in the 7.3 Powerstroke? I picked up a Mobile 1 99% efficiency filter too. Altogether 2 gallons of Castrol and one gallon of Lucas with the filter was like $90. I already had the Valvoline.

I was thinking of using Castrol Syntec 5-50 because it worked great in my Dodge 5.9 RT motor and in my air compressors at work... but am not sure if it would be good in the diesel. The viscosity range is there. It runs high cycle heavy duty compressor motors like a champ. And it was on sale 5 quarts for like $30 with a filter. Maybe next time if I learn that it is okay.

That Lucas stuff is a big no-no and is not for use in our engines. I believe it says so right on the bottle, it's no compatible with our injectors and can foam badly. As far as the 5w-50 goes, it's probably not a diesel oil so that should be avoided, but the 15w40 Castrol should be ok, make sure it's CJ-4 oil. I'm not sure what Valvoline you have there, but if it's Premium Blue diesel oil, that's good stuff.

Thanks for the info. That is why I figured I'd lurk a bit online first. The Valvoline is in the blue bottle, and the Castrol in the green. NAPA was closed today and they didn't have Valvoline at Autozone. So it was Chevron or Castrol, and I have used Castrol for years in my other rigs.

I'll save the Lucas for my fj40.

I took another look, the Castrol meets or exceeds the CJ-4 requirements, but now I am thinking of checking Walmart to see if they have Valvoline since that is what the previous owner had been using. I just hate buying from Walmart. Maybe I'll wait for NAPA to open in the morning.

She seems to run well, but the oil is dirty. I want to change it as soon as possible.

I would not run the lucas oil stabilizer and the 50 weight oil in a 7.3. Both are way too heavy for a HEUI injection system IMHO. Ford recommends a 15w-40 from 0-120*F and a 10w-30 from -20 to 90*F.

Thanks for the replies!

I used Valvoline. The dude at NAPA said the farmers around here use Lucas in everything, but I'll listen to Ford owners. Thanks a lot.

Farmers are the ones to listen to about trucks. They know so much more than Ford does about how to maintain trucks.

Only use advice from Ford on raising crops.

Why do people like the NAPA guy make such stupid comments?

WHY are we mixing brands of oil?? at least thats what I'm thinking he said and did....
These engines are very expensive to maintain and repair, why pour a Witches brew of mixed lubricants and additives into one?????
