This topic usually starts quite a commotion, at least in the motorcycle forums. But being new to the diesel world, could someone fill me in on brands of oil, filters, and change intervals? I live in the "always cloudy and raining-so don't move here you damn californians!" Seattle area
Cheers,
Bryce
We run through 5 - 55 gallon grums of the stuff changing our trucks and tractors in the spring time. Its the best oil we have ever used and since we get special pricing for buying in bulk and being farmers it makes it quite economical. Even without the discounts its still not that expensive, unless you run the synthetic stuff.
You asked about filters and I think you should stick with the motorcraft filter for your motor or if you have an International truck dealership I would use those, for the diesel.
See thats why I like Shell Rotella- made for diesels and just about the best oil around. I use it in my gasser rigs as well because it carries SL and SJ ratings for use in the most modern gassers.
Well, I can tell you what brand NOT to use, Quaker State. Last oil change I did I used Motorcraft 15W-40 CI-4 rated oil, everything was fine. The dealer did the recall oil change and used Quaker State. Now she does the old romp romp the first start of the day. Then again, maybe it's the new ICP sensor they put in. Quaker State at a Ford dealership?
Always rainy Seattle area??? I was just up there a couple weeks ago and it was sunny and clear the whole time. Maybe I'll move up there and help drive of the cost of real estate.
Rotella is great, the new Delo syn is supposed to be great, and for higher mileage engines that have alot of sludge built up in them, Case/IH #1 has the best detergent qualities of all of them but it can be hard to come by.
You can buy the anti-foam additive from International. If you suspect the romp romp is happening as a result of the oil, pour a bottle of the anti-foam agent in (Lubrizol) and see if it goes away. If it does, it was indeed the oil. If it doesn't, your ICP has probably crapped out on you.
I've been using the Fleetrite anti-foam additive since my first oil change as well as Motorcraft 15W-40 oil. Idle was a little smother with the additive and only a little romp when first started, about 5 to 10 seconds. Then my dealer did the ICP change and oil/filter change, but I said no way to any re-flashing of the electronics. The dealer put in Quaker State oil. When I got home I poured in another bottle of the anti-foam additive. Now I get the old romp romp for about 20 seconds if I let it go, 5 to 10 seconds after startup. Giving it a little throttle clears it up too. With both oils, the romp was inconsistent. But I seemed to do better (much less romp) with the Motorcraft brand oil. The other variable is the ICP sensor. I'm going to keep this oil in until I hit 10,000 miles and then change back to Motorcraft and see what happens then. This little bit of romping is the only "problem" I've had with the engine, so I not complaining considering what some folks are going thought.
