Engine swap?
I was wondering if it's possible to swap out my 1979 302 V8 5.0L engine for a larger, newer model? It does have stupid California emissions control systems on it, and I'm assuming any newer models have it as well.

I'm kind of new to this whole thing so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Your rig is NOT exempt from emissions and the BAR/CARB/DMV will require that you meet the emissions standards and have the equipment of the newer engine. Meaning, you can "update" but you have to install EVERYTHING emissions-related of the newer engine and pass the typically more stringent sniffer test... along with visiting a CARB-certified Referee Station, get a certification test, visual test, and pay fees up the ying-yang.
Here's where it gets fuzzy. It is possible to install a newer engine and dress it up like a 79 and run the 79 smog stuff. Most techs won't get picky but there is a chance one will. Never say "engine swap" when talking to the smog tech.... it tends to mean a non-stock configuration for your particular truck (like a 460 in place of the 302). Instead, use the term "engine replacement" which means it's still the same configuration but not the original block. It sounds like semantics but VERY important to keep in mind.
If you wanna do a build up, buy yourself a 1975 or older vehcile because they are exempt from all emissions tests... notice the years of my toys in my signature. Get it??

Thanks again!
