Looking for information on what size engines will fit in my 98 F-150. It has a 4.2 in it now. I was hoping to find a high performance engine that will drop in without too much modification. Also need info on auto transmissions. I hope to hear from anyone that has any useful info. Thanks
Hello jse and welcome to FTE. Someone else will chime in with more information but the bottom line is this.
Trade this truck off for one that has the engine and other things that you want.
Todays modern vehicles are not user friendly to changing from a V-6 to a V-8 or from a manual to an automatic transmission because of all the computer controls. Replacing the V-6 with a V-8 would essentially require a entire donor vehicle for the engine, wiring, and computer. Sorry to rain on your parade.
I agree. I have a couple of older trucks and a '98 as well. The old ones are fairly simple machines that will accept just about anything under the hood. Unless you're a
mechanic at NASA, however, I wouldn't bother with the engine swap on the '98...too expensive, too complicated, and what's the point? You want a V8 in a Ford truck? You're better off buying one. If you're just Jonesing to swap a motor in something, pick yourself up a '48-'60 Ford truck and come on over to the '48-'60 forum...TONS of info and great folks over there...
Yeah, come to the darkside, we have cookies!! Truthfully, S.E.M.A. might start an aftermarket for these "newer"trucks, but it's gonna cost a gazillion dollars to do it. Making these trucks computer reliant, makes it harder to modify. Sign of the times.
I can't wait to get some of those. One of my '60s will be heavily modified: Custom frame, crew cab, stretched doors, chopped top, Monte Carlo front end, bags, digital gauges, 460...I'm even thinking about how to make a power retractable hardtop that retracts into the bed. My other '60 is much closer to being done though, and it's bone stock, so the "Frankentruck" will have to wait.
