I thought I fixed my 4th gear start apparently not, but I did narrow it down to the NSS being bad! I can unplug that sucker and jump the truck over via the fender mounted solenoid and it will shift through all gears. I plug that sucker in and I get a 4th gear start.

I NOW HAVE CONFIRMED A BAD NSS(MLPS) WILL AND CAN CAUSE A 4TH GEAR START!

Now I wanna know how can I bypass that bugger? I am only wanting to temporarily do this until I can get this part. I dont wanna look like a goon and pop the hood to start the truck....HAHA What wires can I splice together to do this to complete the circuit?

just as suspected then.
i tell ya what, your recent issues finally motivated me to update my MLPS (iv known about the updated version for a few months now, just kept putting it off.)
i literally just got back in from installing the updated '95+ plug with new MLPS.
18 years was long enough on the original outdated plug setup.i wasn't gunna try for 20.
that was about as much fun as POKING A STICK IN MY EYE!!!!! lmao.but she's all done now,and i shouldn't run into these issues.
fyi;
advance auto.buy online and use promo code VISA.
nice deal on the upgraded MLPS with lifetime warranty.
i ran and got it yesterday, and just put her in.

if your short on funds right now, shoot me a pm with your addy.i'll send ya my old one.works perfect and will get ya by for now.no $ of course.for free.my trans was working perfect.i just wanted to make sure it stays that way lol.

I just happen to find a parts store a little ways away that had one in stock. I replaced it all is good again. You know I didn't have to change my plug end. It came with one but I was in need of it being changed asap! I must have something out of adjustment now. I cant seem to get it down into 1st gear, like it bottoms out.

oh you lucky sob!!!
the updated MLPS won't bolt in the old plug.it's all different.so someone already did the work for you in the past.
you where supposed to have as much fun as i just did lol.too bad for you,you would have just loved frigging with them pins lol.
im not sure how you messed up the linkage position though. get the 15mm back out.
well, actually no,if you got it this close,it might be the two mlps bolts.hard to say,i can't see yours lol.you'll figure it out so it all lines up properly.it's not hard.you missed out on the whole job compared to what i just did haha.ok it wasn't that bad to do,im just glad its over though.

lets go pats!
(don't let us down anymore this season. )

1992 F-350, 7.3 diesel with the E40D tranny.

I installed new torque converter, everything worked before replacing the converter, the old converter was starting to slip no slipping with the new converter now it but transmission won't go into 1st gear or shift into overdrive. Any ideas or help on this sure would be appreciated. Thank you!

Yeah so I'm having some of these problems. The tach sensor was not working well, it would work sometimes and not others, I looked at it and it was not looking too hot, wires looked worn and it looked like fluid was leaking past the wire connection. I replaced it and the tach still does not read at all. Also now, when I crank it, the OD light remains on and the truck feels like it does not want to get out of a higher gear. I can manually shift it but it just feels like it might be stuck in 2nd or 3rd when I put it in OD.

A lot to people are mentioning that their OD light is flashing.. mine just remains on from the start.

Could that be something different?

ideally you should have started a new thread rather than posting in an old one.however i see how you might think some symptoms might look the same.
your trans control unit isn't getting power.you need to check the fuses and relays under the hood.
im unaware of where these are on your '89 though, but no doubt that's your issue.

Yeah since some of the symptoms were similar and the fact that "gumper 123" specifically mentioned my exact problem, I posted my comment here.

Thanks for the help y'all! I will be looking into that this weekend! The wife and I are going to be needing the truck soon.

Thanks for the help guys.... I feel a bit foolish now. So I popped open the hood and was looking at the electrical connections and then traced back to the tach sensor and I realized that when I replaced the fan clutch two weeks earlier I must have bumped the electrical connection on the tach sensor. The plastic connector clip has broken, being 25 year old plastic and therefore has a loose connection. Fixed it with a zip tie!

if the light is on, on the OD switch than, OD is off, if it is on when you start it, there is a fault.
