back up lights
back up lights
To all
I could use some help on wiring again. I am working on my 70 wagon. It appears that this was a three speed vehicle, but has been switched to a auto. Where originally would I find the backup lights swith. I am assuming this would have been some sort of manual switch attached to the tranny- that when you put it in reverse it completed the circut and the lights came on? I am guessing the switch is not there but maybe the pigtail still is- what color is the wiring and is it located by the tranny? How about for an auto- how does it work?

The three speed manual tranny had the backup light switch on the steering column at the shift linkage. The C4 automatic has a combination neutral safety and backup light switch mounted to the shift lever shaft on transmission. Picture is of the C4.

another question
Thanks for the photo- I think I am more of a visual kind of person- to see it helps. The c-4 does not have the switch intalled, but it came with the truck with boxes of other stuff. So I am sure I can install it back. My question is that if this truck was originally a three speed (still has shifter collar) but now has BM shifter on the floor. Can I wire the auto switch in? I replaced the turn signal wiring switch in the steering column and do not remember any wires that were not used that might have gone to the back up switch? I am also curious- I know the later trucks came with a nuetral saftey switch- did a 70 have one? I am assuming not-I have seen people loop them back into itself to bypass the switch, but would have noticed that. So if I wire the switch that came with the tranny (75) that has a combined switch- will it work? This truck has an antique tag on it- so It does not need inspected, but I would like back up lights- in your opinion would it be easier to just put these lights on a toggle switch and call it done?
Yes, you can use a toggle switch for the backup lights, but would highly advise wiring in the NSS. Most aftermarket shifters have provisions for at least one switch. I have no experience with the B&M, but see no reason why you can't use the stock switch. You will have to determine that.

That's what I did. May depend on the Inspection station. B4 I had it I just left in the lenses w/o a back up lense in. Our state - if not equiped, not needed. Now da guy sez: "wipers, lights, back up" & I just flip em on.
