Question wheres the switch for the backup lights?

I have a 78 fi50 automatic with a 351M. My backup light haven't worked for the 5 years that I owned the truck. The bulbs are fine and the rest of my lights work. so I am thinking that the switch is bad. Where is it? In the dash, on the tranny? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's on the tranny after 77 1/2.

Should be on the drivers side, where the linkages go into the trans. There's one switch that controls the neutral safety and reverse lights.

It should be in one of two places. #1) on the steering column down by the fire wall under the dash, #2) on the transmission shift linkage on the left side of the trans. It's the neutral safety switch as well. Try a search on this topic, I have seen many post about this over the last year or so. -Ed

In 78 they switched it to the side of the transmission.

It has two bolts holding it on attached to the shift lever

This is a fairly old thread, but I want to revive it because the Ford service manual, produced by Ford for the 1978 model year, still shows the neutral safety switch as being attached to the steering column on the F-series truck. If you want the correct set of instructions for the 78-79 F series trucks, look at the directions for the E-series(vans) vehicles. I would imagine that other manuals, since they copy directly from the manufacturer manuals, would be incorrect also.
