Earlier today I hopped into the Ex to move it across the driveway and my buddy pointed out a "clunk" when I shifted into reverse, and then again to drive. He thought it must be the U-joint but I crawled under and the drive shaft was tight.....so you think it's something I should be worried about? I would much rather pay now to replace something preventative (even if it is major) then be stranded somewhere down the road! I want to keep this thing on the road as long as possible
IMO, a clunk when going from Drive to Reverse is just wear and tear on the driveline. Crawl underneath and turn the driveshaft by hand with the trany in Park, there's some give even with tight u-joints. Just drive an enjoy, you've got better things to worry about.

You can't check for bad u-joints with the driveshaft in the truck, unless they are so bad they are about to drop out of the shaft. The only way to know if the u-joints are bad is to remove the driveshaft.
