This is probably a stupid question but I removed my f250 emblems on 79 and I don't know how to put them back on? It looks like it's attached with a special rivet but I'm not sure how it all goes back together. Is there any special way you guys put them back on or do you just glue them in place?
that "rivet" you are seeing on the end of the emblem pins should actually be a barrel clip. My 73 had both barrel clips on one emblem, and acorn nuts on the other. Someone had my emblems off before and for my 73 I believe it should have the acorn nuts. I think your truck uses the barrel clips. I recommend replacing even old ones when re-installing emblems. You should be able to buy them at most automotive stores like NAPA, CarQuest, etc. I usually buy them at a local store here which sells auto paints, glues, small hardware, etc. They have a rack of small bags of misc auto stuff out front on the floor. Maybe someone there can help you match up what clips you will need. Just take an emblem with you and ask.

Applications: 1977/79 F100/350 & 1978/79 Bronco: Used with emblems and nameplates.
Best way scenario, install the barrel clips into the holes first, then press the emblem's pins into the clips.
Ford sold exterior mouldings/emblems and nameplates with all the attaching hardware.
If individual clips were needed, they were usually bought from automotive paint supply stores, where body shops buy their supplies.
Acorn nuts were not used, what was used on some were self threading nuts. As they are being installed, they cut threads on the pins, but...
In some cases, it would be very difficult to reach behind emblems with your mitts to access any type of nuts.
That's why barrel clips were used...cuz it wasn't necessary to reach behind anything.
On my 79 Trailer Special the emblems have a tapered studs on them, fit into a plastic bushing that are pushed in the holes of the truck. They make the replacement bushings and can be found at most auto parts places
I know this is an old thread, but I figured it would be better than starting a new one with the same question... with one twist: I have a new hood where the holes arent drilled out for the emblem. I'm debating on drilling the holes & buying the new emblem pieces - but am afraid of eventual rust.
OR
buying the emblems, grinding off the tabs and using adhesive to fix them to the hood
OR
no emblems (but I just feel like it's missing that something without the F O R D across the front).
Any suggestions? ideas? I was thinking painters tape & spraying rustoleum from the inside if i do drill it out? what adhesive to use if I don't? etc
Emblem adhesive is best left for lighter plastic emblems, IMO. I think body panel adhesive sets up harder than emblem adhesives?
Can you reach where the letters' studs would protrude through the outer sheet metal? If so, you could seal it up from behind, so no water gets inside.
I think those grommets which go over the studs do a pretty good job of keeping water out. I'd be more worried about drilling the holes straight - I think the dealers and body shops used to have paper templates to locate those holes.
You don't have many choices, since at least on mine the correct location on the hood is behind the inner wall ofthe hood and it is inaccessible. Painting around the holes with body paint is probably the easiest solution. Check those barrel clips for size before buying - I bought a set supposedly specifically for Ford emblems that turned out to be both small for the existing holes and too loose on their ID to hold the letters well. You can tighten the inner hole with some judicious bending, but at leat on mine it still was not strong. Another option is to enlarge the hood holes to 1/4", get some grey hollow wall anchors, cut their length to about 5/8", and they will hold the letters nice and tight.
Thanks guys, it's kind of what I was thinking but wanted to hear from the group in case anyone had a solution that didn't pop in my head. I will definitely check out the paper template though! that would be amazing if I could get my hands on one.
You can make your own templates for each letter then tape them in the proper location.
I would get the placement measurements off an original hood then go from there. the hardest part will be getting the letter perfectly level with the bottom edge of the hood. just take your time and get it right.
Even Ford didn't get it straight all the time. My '79 and several others I've seen over the years locally had at least two of the leading-edge FORD letters just slightly skewed.
Been bothering me for 30 years, and probably will for at least another 10 until I make time to fix them!
I would grind the tabs on the letters flush and use a GOOD (like3M) double back tape to apply. No hood damage from drilling or rust issues.Remove the letters fairly easy down the line if you decide to.
