Question Camshaft

A Camshaft was purchased from Comp Cams for my 390 rebuild. I said I wanted a cam that was better (a little hotter) than the stock cam. I intend to tow and haul with my truck. Here are the specs as best as I can decipher them...

Intake Exhaust
Valve Adjustment Hydraulic Hydraulic
Gross Valve Lift .484 .484
Duration @ .006 Tappet Lift 260 260

Open Close
Valve Timing @ .006
Intake 24 BTDC 56 ABDC
Exhaust 6 BBDC 16 ATDC

is this a good cam ?

Camshaft

Steve,

Assuming your 390 is being built in pretty much stock form, this should be a pretty good camshaft choice. It appears that this cam is a 'single-pattern' grind, as the duration and lift figures are the same. 'Dual-pattern' camshafts have different duration and lift numbers on both the intake and exhaust sides. (i.e. 272/282 duration and .460"/.480" lift)

A newer designed cam, like a dual-pattern, would probably be a slightly better choice for towing and hauling. Torque is what we're after here, not high-end horsepower. Look for a cam with the most lift for the least duration, and also look for a cam with the least amount of duration spread between the advertised and 0.050-duration numbers. Nonetheless, the cam you list looks like a good one and should produce a nice quality idle with definitely more torque than the stock cam.

Can anyone else here concur?

Eric

I agree. I have never used a comp cam but they just get too many negative inputs as far as the FE goes anyway. Bad distributor gears, flat lobes etc... The edel performer or the Crane 901 would be great.
