I decided I needed to go through my 400 and re-seal it up as it was starting to leak some oil. I also figured it would be a good time to change the timing set and then that led to a cam change. LOL That truck would never even spin the tires going around a corner and now you just goose it and its turning them going straight! So it currently has a Edelbrock performer 400 intake with long tube headers and this EnginePro cam. I got the cam from my local machine shop for about $130 with lifters, couldn't pass it up.
Anyway, my point is I have always read on here that a good intake, cam, and headers will wake one of these up. I never thought it would have helped this much. It felt like going from a 6 cylinder to an 8 cylinder. LOL
Here's the cam specs for the cam. I was on a tight budget for this engine.
I know the feeling I took a stock 400, and added a 265 DEH cam and lifters, straight up timing set, Eddy intake, Holley 4 barrel, HEI ignition, and headers pretty much all in one shot.
Wow, it was like someone stuck a new engine in while I wasn't looking!
hmmm i dont find it ridiculous, stock 400s reved to 4k without any hesitation, almost every good compression built here is making their max power at 5k, which is a great rpm range for a 4" stroke mildly built engine.... I rev my 400 to 5500 and my peak power is 400hp@5000 with a nice xtreme energy cam and 10:1 Cr keeping stomping torque at 2000.... so its possible even with his cam advertisment that his peak hp could be at 4500 due to headers, intake carb and stuff..
I haven't put a tach in the truck yet as that is another thing on the "to do list" but I don't feel it has any shortage in power now and am happy with it. Actually runs better then I was expecting.
Hollenjoe- The engine is all stock other then whats listed. The block is a 72 with D5 heads..It was a reman engine. So its a gamble if it is the early 400 compression ratio or not. Last time I ran a compression check on it had 145-150psi on all 8 cylinders about a year ago. I am happy with those numbers you provided.
I have a 77 F250 crew cab that has the 351m in it, might start looking for a 400 now and do a few more mods and put a bigger cam in it and see how that goes.
Hey Burg, send me a message on RMFTC.com, i have a standard bore 400 block, and a standard 400 crank, and 2 sets of connecting rods, aswell as a set of builder heads, i think they are the pre 75 heads. I was going to build another 400 and put it in my new project, but decided on a different engine for it. I also have a few old tachs, one is my goodluck charm and not for sale, and the other is a digital display tach.
My biggest limiter to RPM was the distributor. The stocker had a hard time getting the engine to 4k. When I added the DUI HEI it'll go past 5k pretty easy (all tach verified).
The dui dizzy had a high voltage coil in it right?, well i think the difference is made by the coil voltage, so a stock dizzy with a super coil can make an engine rev higher....
