early vs. late model timing covers

I have a 78 timing cover on 75 engine. I also had it on a newly rebuilt 78 engine. For some reason it leaks at the v. dampener/crank seal. It had a diff. crank in each engine. I can look up between the cover and v.d., and see oil trickling down.

I know you are going to tell me the procedure for centering the cover/seal on the crank with the v.d. I've done it twice. I've replaced the seal twice, using different dampeners, each time with a new 'sleeve' on the dampener. I'm tired of seeing a softball diameter spill under an engine with only about 25k miles.

I would like to replace the cover (might get carried away and R&R the cam too)and wondered if it would be wise to use the cover off a later year 300. Can someone tell me if one from the late 80's or even early eighties would work?

I will certainly change to efi pan gasket at the same time.

Was just doing a quick check on line between what was available for a '78 300 and a '96 300. Both timing covers were listed as the same one.
However, they were both listed as using part number E5xxxxxx, so it was revised in 1985. The older ones were updated (which means it'll work on an older one), and they continued using the '85 revision for the rest of the run.

What the changes were, I have no idea.

AB--Thanks for checking. Why didn't I think of that? I believe the diff. is that the later models had guides, little dowel like ****, like on a head to guide it in place. "Thank you, Ford." There must be a warpage issue with mine. Of course the great kevin could not have installed it incorrectly twice!!

(Also wanted to let you know that my novel, Child's Play, is up on Amazon Kindle, and Smashwords. And is selling well ) Also doing a reading of my children's book in November.

Back to automotive work: I wonder if a v.d. from a 90's era would work on a 70's era. Certainly Ford did not change the crank?

Something besides pressing the harmonic balancer on to line up the cover, reaching behind and tightening the bolts, and then pulling the balancer back off so you can properly torque them would be greatly appreciated. So hopefully the new design has that.
I know there's always "Ford Specialty Tool XXX" for jobs like that, but I'm generally not about to track them down.

And who knows, maybe your cover is warped? I've done two covers and they've never leaked a drop. Certainly more plausible than you installing it wrong...twice.

I found your book on Amazon, that's very cool! I meant to email you about that.
Do you need a Kindle to read them? Or did I miss another option? I don't have one of those.

Very glad to hear it's selling well, that's awesome!

If you go to Smashwords.com, they let you download right to your pc. You have to click off the adult filter to find it. (It just has a tiny bit of language, and chap #2 has an adult situation).

Can someone explain something: I am wondering why the harmonic b. for my 75 is over $400 new at AZ, but other, newer models are around $76? I even notice that the 75 and 78 engine h.b.ers are diff.
