Maybe I haven't looked hard enough, but I haven't seen to much mentioned if people are going new with this when re-building. I know it's important, and with so many things I'm not sure what to look for to see if it's bad.
For those of you who do not know I didn't hear this motor run before I bought it
TIA
David
Look for any pieces of loose rubber [front and back]. On a running engine, one can take a crayon or chalk and make a line across the balancer, from side to side. After driving, look at the line to see if it has shifted? If so, the bond between the metal ring and rubber is failing.
I have a 75 that I pulled from the j/y and rebuilt. I used the harmonic balancer that was on it. Surprisingly, when I looked for my year engine I was surprised to see at A.zone that a new one costs $400!! But other years, early 80's for example, cost but $80! I would say that if it looks good, and then your timing sets fine, I would keep what you have. If you get probs, it is a simple matter to replace.
I also see that Comp Cams makes a trick one for over $400.

Thanks for the info! Mine is a 78 and once I got all the gunk off of it, it looks really good. As you suggested I will re-use it and as long at it times fine I'm good
Thanks again
David
