Somehow, the cover on my 1986 F350 developed a crack! The question I have is: Will it work?
The motor in the truck is a mid 70's 429, and the cover is broken. I have the cover off of the original 1986 460. The old one is the type that the oil seal is internal. The 1986 has the external seal. The balancers are different.
Will the newer cover work with the older engine???
Will it work? Hard to say without seeing it.
The '86 460 will fit. Just check it to see if it has a mechanical fuel pump mount (if you need one). I can't recall if the later models had the fuel pump boss. The seal style doesn't matter - just get the correct seal (later models install from the front).
Some timing covers don't have the dipstick tube, if that's something you need.
OK! Thanks! Just wondering if the balancer would go through the external seal.....Everything else bolts up. Since I changed the oil pan, the dipstick moved to the side of the pan, so won't need it to go through the cover.
I would be careful swapping balancers without a lot of research. Sometimes it's just a timing pointer move or recalibration, sometimes it's a serious balance problem if one of the engines is externally balanced.
The balancer on a 460 is the same, but depending on whether the engine is internally or externally balanced there will be either a counterweight (a.k.a. hatchet) or a spacer behind the damper. The hatchet or spacer is the part that goes through the seal.

Not going to change the balancer....just wondering if the seals were the same diameter so they would fit.....
