Hi guys I have a 2000 f250 and my overdrive is not working. I have tryed putting a new switch on to the shifter did not fix the problem. I also checked the wire to see if it was shorting out or got unplugged but that also was not the problem. Just need to know what to look at next. I dont use it much just once a week when I am pulling my trailer to go mow lawns. I dont think I even need to use it. Its not very heavy but Im kind of a freek when it comes to having every thing working and looking good on my truck.
Did you take the cover off the steering column to inspect the wires where they enter the shifter handle? That's where they usually break or rub through.

Yeah that is where I checked the wire and made shore it was plunged in. And every thing was good
Did you ever figure out this problem? I have a 00 350 with the same problem. Took the column cover off and it was un plugged, so I thought, damn that was simple. But it still didn't work and had no shorts from plug to button. Let me know what yours turned out to be, thanks.

I ended up replacing the handle because it broke and when I did I found that the wire had been cut right where it goes into the handle which is why i did not see it when i checked because it was hidden under the cover. I dont know if it happened on its own or if the previous owner did it.

The OD Switch (Transmission Control Switch - TCS) is a momentary switch which means the contact is only closed while you depress the button. While in overdrive if the button is pushed it sends a momentary 12 volt signal to the PCM on the TCS lead. The PCM then disables overdrive and lights the OD lamp (TCIL) by sending a ground on the TCIL lead. Push the button again and the momentary 12 volt signal is sent to the PCM and the PCM enables overdrive and removes the ground on the TCIL lead and the OD lamp goes off.
Check that there is 12 volts on the lead that goes from fuse to button. If there is 12 volts check to see if, while button is depressed, it passes to the TCS lead. If the PCM sees the 12 volts it will alternately supply a ground back to the TCIL every other time the button is depressed. It will turn the OD lamp on and off.
When you open the wiring diagrams at bottom of post this will hopefully make more since.
I put my meter on the plug end and I have continuity through two of the three wires when I press the button. I don't think my wires ar cut. The light will not come on and the tranny will not down shift when I push the button. Any other ideas?

The wiring is damaged between the connector in the steering column and the PCM.
Pressing the button should make continuity from the RED/YEL wire to the TAN/WHT. Is there 12 volts on the RED/YEL wire? There is probably a wiring problem and why the PO unplugged the connector. Fuse 19 or 45, depending on model year, was probably blowing when he pushed on the OD button.
The third wire, WHT/LT GRN, the TCIL lead, is for the ground to light the OD off lamp. You won't see a ground there until the PCM sees the momentary 12 volts on the TCS lead. If you ground the WHT/LT GRN wire the OD off lamp should light if there is 12 volts on the RED/YEL.
Like Mark said "The wiring is damaged between the connector in the steering column and the PCM", OR between the connector and the fuse.
