It's most likely the wires to the button. They often break where they enter the shifter handle inside the steering column. Take the plastic cover off the steering column and you should be able to see the broken wires. You can either fix the wires or replace the shifter handle for about $50.
thanks Mark, what plastic cover are you talking about, the shifter **** or the actual steering column? and how do I get the shifter **** off, does it twist off or pop off?
He's talking about the steering column cover. It's not the button on the end that has the problems. It's where the wires come out of the lever inside the steering column.
happened on mine, wires were broke but there wasnt enough room for me to fix them, bought a new shift lever, only about 50 bucks like Mark said. It was easy to change.
thanks guys, that would have been the first place that I looked. I'll try to fix it but it sounds like I may have to buy the new part. Is the problem easy to spot under the steering column?
Yes it's easy to spot. Look at the wires coming out of the shift lever and follow them about 4" - 6" where they plug into a connector. My wife's truck had the wires break right where they come out of the lever, so like Adam, we just bought a new lever. Others have been lucky enough to have it short further away so they can simply repair the wires.
