I am planning to rebuild and reuse the DSII dist. that came off my motor. When I removed the dist. I noticed the hexagonal shaft was kinda lose and moving around. Is this ok? And if not how do I tighten it up?
TIA
David
Also, is the distributor original? If so, there have been a few design flaws that have been addressed with current rebuilds.
About five years ago, I had the fun experience of having my vacuum advance canister snap off while off-roading and had to drive home with the timing dancing around every time I went over a bump. (In my defense, It was before I knew much about engines and how to fix them on the side of the road. ) The original distributor had a very weak and frail arm that held the canister on. It's been beefed up nicely on more recent versions.
A new DSII distributor is actually pretty cheap. About $50 or so (plus you get a warranty).
As for the oil pump drive shaft (the hex shaft), I don't think they're supposed to be super snug. Mine's always had a little bit of slop in it. Then again, mine's probably original.
If you're concerned about it, it looks like Autozone has them for around $7.
It's funny you mentioned the vac advance bracket breaking, as mine did when the motor rolled over when I cut the straps holding it to the pallet. I was thinking I could repair it with JB Weld or something, but as you mentioned seeing remaned are not that expensive
I might just go that route
Thanks for the info!
David
Yeah, with as inexpensive as they are, there's no point in mucking around trying to repair a worn out/broken one. I think some of the repair parts rival the cost of a whole replacement.
