We are in the final stages of restoring my 1955 Ford F100. FYI, I have a Ford 302 motor with automatic transmission. We started the motor up and there was a loud grinding noise that sounded like metal to metal. When we took out the MSD distributor, there was a slight bent on the shaft.
While we had the distributor sent out to the machine shop to have it straightened, I am wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem. If so, what causes this?
I have never seen a SBF bend a dist. shaft. Hard to say what would cause it, the bottom of the gear (at the end of the shaft) is supported in the block so there should be no where for the shaft to go to cause a bend.

New distributor? First time install for this distributor? Did the engine actually start and run? Perhaps installed wrong or installed wrong at some time earlier.
Are you saying the shaft was bent before, you straightened it, reinstalled and now it's bent again? Sounds like some mis-matched pieces in there, to me.
