Base Line Dyno run on the PRE-STROKE

Took the old IDI to a dyno pull competition...heres the cool part. I DIDNT TAKE LAST lol

Heres the dyno sheet. 170hp and 343FPT. Not bad for a 17 year old truck with limited mods

Heres the YouTube link.

I wanted to well document my baseline readings because I am far from done with this truck...

i knew there had to be something up with taking that cummins off the line like you did.
it wasn't due to the clumsy ZF5 that's for sure.it was the set of 4.10's out back.
fair numbers at the wheels, but when was her last tune up?
have you thought about upgrading to the banks down pipe?
what was she boosting @ there?

Mods: Pump injection timing advanced to 8.5 degress @2500rpm, muffler removed with 2.5" pipe welded in place.

Future mods: Intercooler (already have it but yet to install it). 3-3.5" off turbo into 4" pipe. Possibly dual stacks or single sidepipe. Gauges so I can increase fuel load. Turbo adjusted to 11psi. Custom intake system with possibility of a hood scoop

My buddys cummins ran the dyno right after my truck. His 97 12v pulled a respectible 252hp and 525FPT.

I dont know how much boost I was pushing due to the fact I have no gauges.

It was fun tho. the only IDI in the line up against 44 trucks.

I beat one Dodge, 92 12v auto 2wd. He hit 148hp and 308FPT.

I believe the winning truck was a 24v twin turbo cummins. 596hp and 1300FPT.

Definitly fun though. only $25

That is pretty good numbers. I have an intercooler and that definitely helps for sure. You will notice the difference. Do you have any plans for head studs or any other fuel mods?

I have a pretty good idea of what head studs are but to install them do you have to remove the cylinder heads?

I have been contimplating propain injection. Not a hot rod system but to be used as a catalyst to slightly inrease power and increase mileage.

I dont have alot of exprerance with the IDI's.

But Im wondering if 200hp is a realistic goal without going overboard. Im sure anything that would increase max hp would increase torque by alot

(p.s. I know hp is a number derived from torque output vs. rpm its sustained at)

It is highly recommended to remove the cylinder head to add head studs but it can be done without it. IMO I would remove it so you can get a better seal on the head and while you are at it you could refresh the head gasket.

As for propane, a few people run it but some are afraid that it is hard on our engine but in moderation it is just fine. There was a guy who ran a homemade setup on another site and it made decent power and there is a guy on different site than that guy who runs the Powershot 2000 system and is making like 296 hp and 487 lb-ft of torque. Granted is is pushing 20 pounds of boost but I believe he gained like like 40 hp with the propane. I'm kinda tempted to try propane and water/methanol together and retarding my timing. But idk it would definitely be an experiment.

And as far as 200 hp as your goal, that is definitely realistic. I have seen some pretty stock trucks do that.

Is there anything special about uhaul pumps or is it just a regular pump?

Oh something else I forgot to say and as Snaponprofile said, an intercooler would be a good upgrade. I have one on my truck and it makes a night and day difference. You will like yours.

Something else I forgot to say is that if you also add head studs you will safely be able to pump the boost up higher and I think you will be in the same territory as you friends Cummins.

what does a head stud kit cost? I wouldnt mind doing it.

oh, btw it was 8.5 degrees @ 2000rpm. my bad on that one.

I wouldnt mind knowing how much boost the bottom end would take.

If I wanted to build a superpowerful IDI I would build up a 6.9 because it has thicker cylinder walls. It could take more punishment.

I will probibly be doing my intercooler this weekend. Im going to pull the bumper and part of the front clip so I can at least get it mounted. I cant really pipe it up untill I get rid of that ATS intake box
