460 vs 425 (v10)

Im taking the motor out of my 96' Bronco and have come across 2 motors to switch to. A 1991 460 EFI from a f350 connected to a manual trans (will convert to auto though). or a 2002 v10 from an excursion (auto trans)

I want to hear everyones opinions on this!! Im leaning toward the 460 but want to hear what people have to say.

Looking for whats gunna give me greater HP/Torque and decent MPGS
460 v8 vs 425 v10

The 02' V10 has around 80hp and 30tq more than the 91' 460. You will get better mpg with the V10 and it will run smoother. Plus you will not have to deal with any of the smog pump, cat with air tube, egr and etc components. Most 02' V10s did not even come with egr. Just keep in mind that the V10 is physically large engine in width, height and length and is even larger than the 460. So expect a tight squeeze. Guys have put V10s in 97'-03' 150s and Mustangs so you should be able to squeeze it into your 96'. You will probably have to run an electric fan though.

I guess my other thing would be also, what one is going to take me less time?

The v10 will have an auto trans and ill use the computer from the truck in mine but the 460 had a 5 speed allison trans hooked up to it so i dont know how im going to get it to an auto unless i do cable shift like they did with the carbed motors right?

Can't help you with the allison as I don't know anything about them. The V10 would definatley need the pcm (also complete wiring harness, MAF, intake and etc.) from the donor truck to run, same with the 4R100 transmission. The VSS sensor on the V10 donor vehicle is on top of the rear differential housing not in the trans. The VSS is an essential part of the system. Both will be a pain to swap in but I feel the V10 4R100 combo with the pcm would be better for performance and longevity as well as being able to use the diagnostic system via the OBDII port.

I believe on the 96 the vss is also in the rear diff so that should help a little as far as the v10 4r100 combo.
Id go with the v10 just to be different, but I would also recommend beefing up the frame and front suspension for the added weight

see thats the thing though. I looking for something to give me more power then my 351w but i wanna be able to swap it in a few months... not a few years then have to track down numerous other parts to beef up lots of other things (i.e. suspension, frame, etc)

Did you consider pulling your current 351 out and giving it a refresh with some more performance oriented parts? Maybe a slightly more aggressive cam, better flowing heads, some long tube headers and a dyno tune. Maybe even some steeper gears to put more power down. There are quite a few performance parts for the 351 and you would not have to modify anything near like you would with a complete engine/trans swap you were looking at.

To be honest OP listen to this guy if your on a time crunch and or do not have the energy to track down parts needed for a swap. As cool and fun as completely re powering a truck can be it can be overwhelming and take quite a bit longer then expected, especially if your on a budget.

I'm not well versed in the 351's but i would suspect quite a bit of power is left on the table in factory spec. doing some mild upgrades like mentioned above, (heads, cam, etc...) or even a complete refresh to oem specs would give you a vast improvement over it's current state.

Now to just touch on the mpg subject, DO NOT get a 460 with the intent of ever getting decent mpg. It won't happen for most people. I happen to get around 8-9 mpg (taking it easy) with my 460/c6 so i wouldn't exspect much above 10-12 with an OD trans.

But talking with my friends and such.. im now considering going carb 460/E4OD or keep my 351/E4OD

If you decide to go with the 460, I have a C6/BW1356 out of my 1992 F350 4x4 donor vehicle I'm looking to do the exact opposite as you are doing with your manual transmission (swap out the auto for the manual).... but it would be going in my TJ (Jeep Wrangler)

Let me know if you need auto parts. I'm struggling to figure out what I need to mate my 400 bellhouse NP435 to my 460... and I need all the hydraulics/clutch stuff.

I'm east coast (Ohio). If I wasn't already pulling the engine out of my truck I would offer to drive it to you to do the swap lol.

Other than that I don't really know much of anything about the V10... just that I love my 460 and can't wait to get it in my jeep.

I think im just going to keep my 351 and beef it up because then all i have to do is flash the computer to eliminate some things and save the 460 for my 79 bronco

Much better idea than a carbed 460 your not going to get "decent mpgs" out of.
