460 vs V10 which is better?

Ok I want to get an F250 or F350 4X4. I have been looking at the older trucks with a 460. I love that motor. Maybe it is time for me to move into the new centry. I love the raw power of the 460. How does the V10 compare? Which offers better fuel economy? (I know the PSD is great I just like gas engines)

I couldn't vote for one or the other. They are completely different periods of time. It's been a long time since I had my 460 truck. If you like the older trucks, see if you can find an older one that is in decent shape. If you like the newer trucks, go test drive a V10 and see if you like it. The newer V10's put out more hp than the first generation V10's. The 6.0 oil burner is also a great motor; I'd test it also.

I get 12mpg in my V10. I think I got around 10-12 in the old 460. Both have good hp and torque. Good luck.

ummmm.... a big block V8 or a small block V8 with two added cylinders.....

yeah, the 460 gets my vote for engine.

BUT... the newer superduty gets my vote on everything else!

No question in my mind, V10.

More power, better fuel economy.

The V10 just has more 'punch' all through the powerband than the 460. I find the V10's tourque really kicks in around 1800-2500rpm, but don't be afraid to rev it, it's got LOTS of top end power and it'll run all day at 3500rpms+.

I've never seen single digit fuel numbers with my V10, and they were all too common with the 460, especially when it got cold.

Technology is a wonderful thing

Avoid the '99 V10s though, as they're down around 25hp to the '00 and newer versions.

Also, the SD package wrapped around the V10 is a real nice step up from the pre SD trucks IMHO.

Well, I had a fuel injected 460 in my first motor home, a 26foot class C. It couldn't get out of its own way if it had to. fuel mileage sucked, it sucked. I then purchased a class A 32' with a v-10, and it would tow my jeep faster and with better fuel mileage than the 460 by itself.

FYI, Class C was 13000#
Class A was 18000#s

V-10 gets my vote hands down.

BTW, I now have 6.0L with fifth wheel towing a jeep. I like it even more for power.

I have A 1997 F-250 HD with a 460 and E40D in it. This truck can kick ***. I would be willing to bet i could beat any v10 im any kind of race. Yes you heard it here. I raced a new V10 during the summer at drag night at one of the local speed ways in my area. It was the same bidy set up although my truck was 2 inches longer. Super cab short bed and the E40D. I smoked the guy. My engine is completly stock with no improvements his was as well. I also had $200 riding on the race. I just bought new tires because my last ones I smoked to Steel belt in them. I would never trade in this truck. My father owns a fleet of trucks all having ether the 7.3 or the 6.0 diesels. But I could take those any day. My fuel econmy is about 13 MPG wich is not grate at all but I will take it for the power.

Are all 1999 gas engines less powerful than the following years?
The 5.4 too?
I don't remember the years.

Yes, the 99's are down on power for both. 275 hp for the V10 and 235hp for the V8.

My 460 was great up to about 2500 RPM...lots of grunt..lots of gas.

The V10 runs circles around it for overall performance. Good grunt (just doesn't feel quite as strong as my 460) after that it pulls away fast in performance. Oh , and it gets about 3 mpg better than the 460 did.

As far as racing a 460 and V10, I know THIS V10 would SMOKE my 460. It wouldn't even be close after about 40 mph.

It looks like the v10 is winning out overall. I drove a V10 for the first time yesterday. It was really nice but I still felt the 460 had more go. I would not be able to tell for sure unless they were to go at it side by side. Towing a load would also help in the comparison. The newer trucks do have a great cab and interior layout.

Something still pulls me to a 460 though. I grew up on pushrod motors. I have never worked on or built a triton motor. Have you looked at the spark plugs on the V10! What a pain that would be!

The V10 is more refined. What about performance mods? What's out there? I know there is plenty for a 460.

Spark plugs only need to be changed every 100k or so on the V10 if that helps.
Also, my V10 is silky smooth with lots of torque on the low end yet not afraid to wind up if needed.
I understand it can be tough to walk away from a good engine like the 460 however I don't think you would be disappointed with the V10.
Good luck on either choice.

racing?

I didn't buy a truck to race. If I did need a truck to run fast down the 1/4, I would go with the Lightning.

The 460 and 413 motors installed in the SD are very good for pulling a race car, tools, spare motor & tranny, pit vechicle, and crew to the race track. You can't to that with the Lightning.

I would personally take the 460 especially if it is fuel injected. My uncles old 96 F250 with the 460 moved really well. I was never really impressed with the V10, didn't seem all that powerful for a 10 cylinder engine, just my opinion though.
