Hey there I was woundering if someone could give me the pro's and con's between the 460's and the V-10's. I currently have a '96 F-250 with a 460, and am thinking of getting a newer truck and want to know how the V-10 compares. powerwise and also MPG.
Thanks
scott
There IS no comparison. The 460 is a dinosaur, while the V-10 is modern technology. It is smoother, quieter, more efficient, more powerful with less cubic inches. It doesn't bust exhaust manifolds like the 460 does. It is 10 times smoother than the 460. It makes MUCH more power AND giets better gas mileage. What are you waiting for ?
I don't have enough experience with my V-10 to give any solid opinions.I will say this.So far it is more responsive at low rpms and revs more willingly.I can see an increase in fuel mileage so far in mixed driving around without a load compared to the 460.I have less than 700 miles so far and expect mileage to improve more if I continue to keep my foot out of it.I haven't really put the coals to it much yet,but so far it doesn't feel any torquier than the 460.Of course in all fairness the 460 does have a Banks Pwr.Pk.system and an MSD ignition.
The 460 is tough and reliable.I get 12-13mpg.in mixed driving empty with the 3.55 axle, and 14mpg.hwy when driving the speed limit. When I tow a 28ft.travel trailer and I run 65-70mph.I get 10mpg.This includes keeping it hammered(65mph.) going up long grades in the eastern appalachian mountains.I wish it had the 6spd. manual transmission that the V-10 has because it has a good size rpm gap between 3rd.and 4th gears when towing. The Banks does help this situation quite a bit though.
Yeah, the 460 is rough around the edges compared to these newer engines, but I trust it and it has served me very well so far.
I'm not knocking the V-10.It is smooth, responsive and let's just say more"refined".It's just going to take some time to really get to know how it behaves in different driving situations.
Scott:
I've got one of each. The 6.8 V10 is a much more refined engine, but with a different sound than the 7.5 V8. My Ex avgs 11-16 and my F350 avgs 9-12 non-towing. I can get 10.5 towing with the Ex and 9.5 with the F350 if I pay attention to the road ahead. Both trailers are over 6K Lbs. If brute force and MPG is a concern, get out your check book and get the PSD, but if you think your 460 is powerfull enough, you'll do fine with the 6.8. You can check HP/Torque curves for both engines at www.gearvendors.com under the FORD tab on the left side. I think the HP/Torque graph for the 6.8L is for an early model. My 2K Ex is rated at 310HP and 425 lb-ft of torque. Enjoy your new truck!
I have a 1986 F250 4X4, auto, 460, and a 2002 F 350 V10, auto, 4.30. Don't hesitate getting a V10. The V10 has better acceleration, and much better milage, its quiet and smooth. I haven't put the camper on yet but I expect it to have more power than the 460. Only 2 fill ups so far, first tank was 11 mpg, second tank was 12.8 mpg. If you are towing, or carrying a load get the 4.30 LS. I don't think there is much difference in gas milage.
V10 HP 310@4250rpm
TORQUE 425@3250rpm
They ae both great egines, both are all about power and whos got the most. True the V10 has use of lots of technology and MPG is a lot better then 460. but just eing able to say you got a 460 thats great there aint to many engines bigger than that. Its all about what you want more,460 got history behind it. The v10 has a great future for it
YES, I'LL THROW MY 2 CENTS IN ALSO. WHY ARE U WAITING? THE COMPARISON FROM MY '02 V-10 4:30 2X4 & MY '91 460 4:10 2X4 IS LIKE NITE & DAY. SO MUCH QUIETER & SMOOTHER IN THE SHIFTING. SO MUCH MORE OF A PLEASURE TO DRIVE, THO THE SEATS ARE A LITTLE FIRMER. I PULL A 32' 5TH WHEEL & DONT EVEN KNOW IT'S BEHIND ME. A REAL PLEASURE TO DRIVE, MUCH TO THE WIFE'S DISPLEASURE, 'CAUSE SHE HAS TO DRIVE THE CAR.GETTING 14 MPG ON ROAD EMPTY & 10.5 WITH THE TRAILER. JUST GETTING BROKE IN AT 4500 MI.
A v-10 has 310hp 425ftlbs torque, a 460 has 365hp and
495ftlbs torque so the numbers explain everything.
but then again I only know about the pre 71 460s
and emmeisions control took the horse out
of horsepower but the 460 should have more
torque still.but the v-10 will be easier on the
poor old gas tank.the more pistons the smooter it gets.
Unless I am reading something wrong the graph for the 7.5L @ gearvendors show 245hp and 400 for torque. If correct, then the V-10 is smaller and more powerful. The info in the previous post got me wondering.
Early model fuel injected 460's had 235 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. Later models had 245 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. And the V10 has 310 hp and 425 lb-ft of torque. So the V10 is more powerful.

Huh????????? Both your numbers and piston comment are news to me.
The 90* V10 is about as un-naturally balanced an engine that ever was. Without the added balance shaft it would be a paint mixer!!!
The previous poster has the correct HP and torque #'s. You can't use pre '71 gross HP numbers to compare with current net numbers.
I would keep in mind that the new super duties are significantly heavier than the older fords that the luke warm 460 used to push around. That is just 2 cents!!
