Whether or not it helps or not, I always wait til my GPR Led goes off, this summer 100+ temps, GP's would be on first thing in the morning after sitting all night for 30 seconds to a minute still, I just don't like the idea of a "Lit" hot plug sticking in the cylinder with the engine running personally, seems like if they were hot enough with the compression in the cylinder they could distort, not likely but thats my logic as well as the added amp draw.
The glow plugs continue to heat for up to two minutes after the WTS light goes out.
That's why I have a LED wired to them so I know when the GPR disengages, I must have worded something wrong, I understand that they stay on longer or do not even come on due to various parameters. I was stating that even in the summer with high temps, I waited until the GP's were off before I started, which even at 100+ degrees was quite a while. I like the idea of just warming the cylinder, rather than using the glow plug as an ignition aid is I guess the wording I should be using.
Maybe I just realized I have been starting my truck, as well as all other diesel's I've driven entirely wrong, as i guess you do need them for ignition aid. I've never had Romps, running synthetic too though, no smoke on startup either, but I didn't realize I needed the glowplugs as ignition aid when cold. I apologize, and will try to use them correctly.
Back in 2006 I got a brand new Kenworth with a C13 Cat, when I took it to Cat to get neutered I asked the mechanic about recommended warm up times. "He said just long enough to build air pressure, and you shouldn't have any leaks, so you should have pressure as soon as it starts"
since then I turn the key and drive away. It warms up much faster going down the road anyway.
Both 3406's are great motors. I personally like the Detriot 60 series, spent alot of time behind many with very little troubles. Cats do have good sound, especially when cold.

I have yet to hear a diesel motor that doesn't sound good and mean when cold.
