I need to replace the A/C clutch on my 02 with a 4.6L V8. Does anyone know if this can be done without removing the whole compressor? I am trying desperately not to have to evacuate and recharge the system. This isn't covered in the repair manual I have, but I assume I am going to need a puller to get the pulley off. My concern is the lack of room between the compressor and the radiator.
I have alreaday tested all of the pressure switches and made sure there is power at the clutch itself. Initially, I could tap the clutch with the handle of a screwdriver and it would work for a few days, so I thought maybe it was just the gap. Now that doesn't even seem to work. A new clutch at the local parts store is only $100, so I figured I would go ahead and replace it. If anyone has any tips on this, I would love to hear them. Thanks!
If the clutch pulley bearings are still good and your only problem is lack of clutch hub engagement due to excessive gap, just buy and install a new Motorcraft clutch hub. Set the clutch gap with the appropriate thickness shim when reassembling.
