That smell is usually caused by mold in the evaporator housing. Dirt and debris gets trapped in there and holds moisture, leading to mold.
The only 100% way to get rid of it is to remove the evaporator housing and clean it out. Not a small job.
Try running the blower for a few minutes with the AC off before you shut it down. This can help dry up the inside of the evap housing. Liberally spraying Lysol in the air intake with the blower running will kill the mold for a while, but it will come back.
