The key thread got me interested in remote starters. Anyone put on on an idi and how would it work with the glow plugs? Also thinking about door retrofit actuators for keyless entry.
I'm sure someone makes one now that will work with glow pugs, but I'm not sure I would want one. A guy down the road from me had one installed on his truck last year (Chevy gas engine with a 5 speed) and he always parked it in neutral with the park brake on. Wellll (you can see where this is going) his son drove the truck one night and forgot to put it in neutral, when he hit the remote the next morning there was a crash and a splash, it had went through the garage door and pushed his wife's new Camry through the garage wall into the swimming pool.
I'd love to be a fly on the wall when that call is made to the insurance agent
I'd love to have one, seeing as its regularly -40 her in the winter, the problem that keeps me from buying one is that the cold idle solenoid isn't strong enough to push the throttle down and set cold idle speed on its own. It always needs assistance from my foot.

LOL, great story!
I know they make some that work with diesels, how they interact with the glow plugs I'm not sure. Theres also ones made to work with manual transmissions, they tend to cost more due to the issues with a clutch. Sounds like that guy either didn't install it right, or used one for an auto tranny and got what he deserved for being a moron and not doing it right. Quite honestly, he's lucky noone got killed that way. It would be pretty easy to think you're safe working under your truck with your keys in your pocket, then roll over and hit the button and run yourself over if its still in gear.

there must be a way to wire this in,so that solenoid can also be triggered on.
i can think a basic way right off though;
put the thing on a toggle switch,and just turn it on every night after your done driving.
i would just research the setup though,and make sure that solenoid just gets triggered.i doubt its complicated to make happen.
edit,
i just thought of another easy way to trigger it without researching the setups for them.
they all come with keyless entry right? you could have it trigger ON when you push the button to unlock the doors.if these things unlock the doors when you go to hit the start engine button........well there ya.there's your trigger tap. if they work like this,and even if you don't have power door locks,it's still good to trigger your high idle solenoid.

The problem isn't triggering the solenoid, it turns on automatically whenever the coolant is below a certain temperature.
The problem is that the solenoid doesn't have the force to push the throttle. Its only strong enough to hold the throttle at an advanced point. You have to provide the tap on the pedal with your foot to get the solenoid to do its work.
A working solution would be to replace the solenoid with a slightly stronger unit that could push the throttle as well as hold it. Finding one should be easy. Adapting it to fit on the IP would be the issue.
Ya they work on diesels! i have one installed on my 85 6.9 idi. They have a time delay that allows the plugs to cycle and then starts right up. Mine worked great i love. Started in the middle of winter great. Its a great thing so go get ya one

oh i see.i never tried to run a jumper to it before,so i didn't know it didn't have enough pressure on its own to push the throttle forward.well thats a bummer.
