How many of you guys have a remote starter in your trucks. It's starting to get cold in Maine and I'm very interested in having a nice warm truck on these cold mornings.
I know you need a starter that works with the diesel glow plugs and so on but what else should I look for. I have a guy that has put about 10 starters in my gas powered rigs but I just want to know more info before I ask
him to install one in my truck.
Are there any brands that work without any extra modules for the diesel. My truck is a base model so I do not need the keyless entry feature either.
Another vote for viper products here.... DEI is the owner, so Python brand and a couple others are the same thing under the hood, so-to-speak. Most all now just have a wire you hook up for the glow plug system, not an extra module.
I have a viper 5901 and it has been great. I no longer use the remote start since the guy's that stold it were able to bypass the alarm. Now I also put my DP in the no start mode as an extra level of security. I have had my Viper system on my truck for 5 years and it was great being able to start the truck remotely.
Another vote for Viper. I needed a DEI unit to work with the manual trans.
I have to go thru a bit of song/dance to make it work, but it does work. At least until you unlock/lock, then you have to do the song/dance again. I just train myself that in the winter I get what I need out of the truck FIRST.
I did alot of research on this two years ago. The crimestopper solution is the best I thought. Crimestopper Security Products, Inc. I think I found mine for like $50. And trust me it was a bear installing it.
Another Crimestopper alarm w/ remote start user, been about 5 years. My glowplug wait to start is set at about 15-20 seconds, I got a lifetime warranty with my install so anything I need done, they service it free of charge.

I have a crimestopper also for about the same price from eBay. I can't say that I am happy about the range of the transmitter (could be due to having the antenna buried behind the A-pillar with all the gauge wiring) but it does work fine when I need it. The remotes seem cludgey and silkscreen paint on the buttons disappeared quickly, the lock and unlock buttons both look the same now.
Ditto on the installation but the price could not be beat.
I think I remember Bob Guzzle saying that the Crimestopper in his opinion a while back wasn't his top choice in systems so theres others and the Viper seems to be the cats meow.. Mine works great but I remember that thead now Bob, lol.. Its all good..
