WOW...that's unfortunately a very likely good guess. If you're saying you have no oil, that means it got out of there in a hurry, which would be HPOP, especially if you have a lot of oil in the valley areas. It could be simply an HPOP hose, but sounds like you're gonna have a messy diagnosis with more oil first.
Has it been leaking for a while? Or did you just dump 2 gallons on your way home today? Or.....has it been slowly leaking for a long time....?
None are good, obviously....what you need to do is;
1. Clean the HPOP area very well
2. fill the truck with oil
3. stuff a bunch of paper towels around the HPOP (each hose and down by the non-removable plug, and the rear snap ring)
5. fire up the truck, rev it up a couple times, to around 2000+ rpm then shut it down
6. pull the towels out slowly and carefully, and see where its coming from.
this is assuming its a fast leak, if its slow then clean it and fire it up and look/feel around for the leak....if its a fast leak it will get all over the place and you cant pinpoint it without another person or a bunch of clean towels to show you where it is.
let us know how it goes or if you need more direction
I would not feel around for a HPO leak. You could get an injection injury that might cost a finger or worse.
I used Q-Tips taped to wooden skewers to feel under the hoses. Ultimately, this is how I figured out my leak was coming from the non-serviceable plug....I let it idle and rubbed around every possible source on the HPOP, the plug came up black, so i swabbed it a couple other times and it kept coming up with black q-tips....
It is comming from the non servicable plug, the truck has had a slight skip so I am leaning twards replacing the pump even though it is quite expensive, maybe a new pump would cure my skip?
just went through the hpop line leak , fortunatly for me it was a slow leak. Truck was running badly, though i have lost an injector. That non-servicable plug is servicable , look around the forums for that info
Here is a writeup I just gave another guy with a HPOP leak....
When mine was leaking it turned out to be the non-serviceable plug. Took me half a day to replace all the O-rings on the HPOP and fuel bowl (i did the fuel bowl because it was already out, so might as well.) YOU ONLY NEED TO REMOVE THE HPOP IF IT IS THE NON-SERVICEABLE PLUG.....
I went to a local DIY car wash and sprayed the pressure washer in the valley, and ran it until i could see clean water dripping down underneath. I drove the 5 miles home, and inspected each fitting/plug on the HPOP with Q-tips to find the leak. Once I found it, i was 90% sure it was the non-serviceable plug. To be sure, I wiped it clean and stuffed some paper towels around it, started the motor, and put it on my high-idle tune then checked the plug again, and it was 100% leaking from there. I ordered the kit, removed the fuel bowl and HPOP, put the new rings in, Loctite'd everything that needed it, and reinstalled it. I let it sit for the full 24 hours before adding any oil to it in order to let the Loctite cure.
It's a fairly straightforward job, just let the loctite cure and don't drop the washer from the hpop drive gear into the motor....or ur in trouble...drain the fuel bowl before you remove it, and drain the HPOP reservoir before you remove that too....i just stuck a clear hose in it and sucked it out and let it cyphon into a bucket.
Here is my first thread about my oil leak.... oil in front of valley - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums[/URL]"
You don't NEED the HPOP quick disconnect tool, i just used a pair of old crappy metal scissors and pryed them off...its really easy, spend that $20 on fuel instead.
and of course......pictures are worth well over 1000 words...
this is with the fuel bowl removed
View of the HPOP with fuel bowl removed, shot is taken from directly above, looking down....
..................................DONT DROP THE WASHER HOLDING THE GEAR ON
Clean the EBPV Sensor tube while you're at it, you need to disconnect one side to remove the HPOP (If it's you non-serviceable plug)
Poke around those links....you'll be dry in no time!!
Thanks Rose Clifford for good info. Can you say sone more about the washer from the HPOP drive gear that you shouldn't drop into the motor pls? I've not seen this referenced before or in the posts you have. Where is it exactly and how do you make sure not to drop it? Thanks again.
It is comming from the non servicable plug, the truck has had a slight skip so I am leaning twards replacing the pump even though it is quite expensive, maybe a new pump would cure my skip?
For $350, get a T500 from Joey at Terminator Engineering (or from Clay at Riff Raff diesel). You'll have to send your old pump as a core. Worse case is, the core fee is only $200. Heck of a lot cheaper than buying a new OEM HPOP, better performance, and a warranty!
I want to thank you all for all of your great advice, unfortunately I went to Ford and ordered the HPOP, the only reason I did this because the truck has been skipping and I am dead in the water without the truck. I don't have another ride and I can't borrow one.Hopefully this will cure the leak and the skip. No I am not telling you what Ford Charged me but I will say it was more than I see here in the threads. Thanks Again Mike
