Wife complained last night that the truck wouldn't start. I turned the key and the truck started, no problem. I drove the truck this morning. Made 4 stops and the truck started every time without a problem. No starter drag, no hesitation. Nothing that would lead to a battery or starter problem. I did however, pickup a new starter and starter selonoid from Napa, came home to replace both units just to be on the safe side. Been quite a few years and mileage on the starter and the relay has never been changed.
I disconnected the batteries, removed the old starter, installed the new starter. I then R&R'd the starter relay, reconnected the batteries. Went to start the engine, no start!....When I turn the ignition to "on" there is no door open chime, no dash gauge lights, no interior lights, nothing. I checked all fuses in both the power distribution box and under the dash.
I rechecked my work and left nothing disconnected. There is power to the starter selonoid and both batteries read 12.95 volts.
Where do I start to look for this problem?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Jeff
Battery Connections are tight, Battery terminals cleaned. Ground and lead at the starter are good. Here's the concern. When the key is placed into the ignition switch, there are no chimes sounding. Key in ignition chime should sound, driver's door adjar chime should sound, dome light should come on when door is open, headlamps don't come on when the switch is turned on. All these functions worked this morning, now they don't. Could the ignition switch be at fault? No power is being generated when the key is in and turned to on or start.
At the relay, are two gray looking wires that connect to it. They should be under the larger cable at the relay. Check to see if u have power to those, They are actually fusible links so I would suggest u check them at the relay and then slightly farther down past where the fuse is. They power the Power distribution box and headlight circuit.
That's what I needed. I hooked up the starter relay wrong and no power was getting to the gray wires. Reversed and the truck starts great. Thanks so much for your help. Always have been apprecative to the heros on this website. Thanks for your guidance.
