I received a piece of mail today from Ford informing me that my truck had not been brought in for this no charge update/recaibration to my Powertrain Control Module. I wanted to ask to see if anyone else had received a similar letter? Have you taken your truck in for this update? What was your experience... does this improve performance in some way? Just curious about what to expect as I have not had my truck that long and have never had to have such and update completed. Take it in or leave it as is?
i got mine done aug 1 2011 and then about a week later i got that same paper telling me it had not been done yet....i think they sent it prior to me getting done....so far i have had no problems just have to get used to the cleaning message going away so quick.
The new flash has allot of additional or more sensitive checks in it for detecting issues. There's a post on another forum where the owner kept complaining about an over heating issue, but because the techs couldn't find anything and there was no CEL, they wouldn't do anything. He received the latest flash and drove about 20mi before the wrench came on. Now they have to do something.
March 31, 2012 is the end of the TSB campaign i.e. the end of reflashing at no cost.
The letter has the same language as the first one stating that Ford reserves the right to deny warranty coverage for any vehicle damage that may have been prevented by the improved diagnostics in the new firmware. This is quite different from saying that they will void the warranty.
As for performance improvement, right after I got mine done my mileage went to awesome for a bit (+2 or +3 MPG depending on conditions). Then, I guess as the transmission "learned" and the mileage returned back to its turd self. I see no long-lasting performance gain.

Given that no one really knows what the new flash includes, Ford claiming that any particular engine problem could have been prevented by it would be hard to dispute. I have both letters on my desk (going in for the flash this afternoon), and the first doesn't contain the warranty warning language the second one has. Don't think it is a customer satisfaction problem, it appears to be a Ford repair cost problem.
Update: got the flash on Friday, and ran it about 700 miles over highway with the camper over the weekend. Ran about the same as before, except the 1 second regeneration message makes it impossible to know how often you go into regeneration, or how long it takes.
