I bought a used 2014 F350 SRW Platinum 4x4 with the 6.7 diesel on Saturday. It has 50k on it. I took it today to get the first service done as the dealer agreed to service it as part of the price and when I got there today the service tech told me there was a recent program update that they needed to install from a recent service bulletin so they were going to do that as well. The service guy came back and told me the tech was having communication issues with his computer and the Ford server and it was going to take a while. I was working while there so I said that was fine. 30 minutes later the service manager came and told me the issue was with my truck. She said it was kicking out an error because the VIN codes weren't lining up on all the components and she'd have to escalate the issue to a special group at Ford and get back to me.
While that explanation was kind of random and not very technical I wasn't worried until she asked me the next question. She said so has your vehicle been in an accident or fixed somewhere other than a Ford dealership. She was unaware I'd just bought it there two days before and it was traded in by a guy who they know well and gets a new truck once a year. It has a clean car fax and meticulous service records so I don't think its been wrecked.
Can anyone help me with a better idea of what the issue may be so I don't freak out that I just spent that much money and I'm about to wish I hadn't? Could it be something like the last person put a tuner or something on it and didn't reset it to stock? I've never had a diesel before and between this and the regeneration stuff I'm seeing I am thinking this impulse buy may have not been so smart.
Don't let this deter you from the truck. I went through a lot of crazy stuff when I bought my truck (used) and 40k miles later I still have it and enjoy it. The only thing that comes to my mind is one of the control modules was replaced and not properly programmed to this truck. While it's unlikely that this would've happened if serviced by Ford, anything is possible I guess. Does anything in the service history indicate that any sort of control module or electronic component was replaced?
I don't think it's the PCM, because I believe the truck would be unable to run without a properly programmed PCM, which also leads me to believe that it was not/cannot be caused by a tune. Maybe someone with more experience in that area will chime in...
I found out that the prior owner had a bulldog programmer and didn't uninstall correctly. The prior owner apparently brought the tuner to the dealership so I can get it removed correctly. Problem solved I guess.
The emissions should be intact as bullydog never offered deletes on 2014s.
Good info, but if the dealer notes the tuner in the trucks file, the warranty could be voided if a problem arises. Not a likely event but something to consider. I'd ask the dealer to clarify the warranty despite the tuner in writing with the threat of giving it back.... even if it's a hollow threat...
Thanks for the info. I bought an extended warranty with the truck as my concern was owning it without a bumper to bumper warranty so I'm supposed to be good to 110k. I will ask them to put it in writing. I double checked and it has the DPF and EGR.
