Hey all... picked up an flathead where the markings translate to the engine being made March 31, 1950. Block color seemed to be a dark blue, valve covers are red marked EAB. It has a floor shift tranny with the parking brake handle right next to the shift lever.
I thought the standard engine color was a green? Any clue as to what the displacement would be? I do know it was rebuilt as it still has the tag on it. Friend of a family friend said it was rebuilt a few years before the truck it was in kicked... and he kept the engine since he knew it was in good shape. Any other info or insight that can be shared about the engine?
I currently have a 54 y-block and I'm wondering if the 54 tranny is compatible? My understanding is that on a 53 (my truck) that the 3 on the tree was the standard transmission so I'd like to keep it. Was floor shift standard in 53s?
Also, is there any market for the transmission the floor shift transmission?
Valve covers? I assume you mean heads....the valves are in the block. Red color sounds right for '50. 239 cubic inches. It is missing the crank pulley (and water pumps) so turning it over will be tough. The trans looks like a spur gear 4 speed, worth scrap value I suppose. It should bolt up to your trans with the correct parts...might want to pull the heads and see whats inside first though....
The Canadian built truck with 239 V8 flat head engines were blue as was the tranny. Mine is 48 F-68 Canadian version of F3. You have a T9 transmission- square cut gears- double clutch special- just the countershaft gear alone is worth $370 if someone needs to buy one. The heads on mine (origninal) are 8BA and have "Made In Canada" cast on top. You may have a Canadian block with USA heads.
I wouldn't read a thing into the color; rebuilders especially paint engines whatever they feel like. Black seems to be their favorite. Owners paint engines what they like. Mine came to me Chevy Orange.
Sherbo, let me know if you end up getting rid of that trans.
Check the cast numbers on the trans for id. There are several that were used and all have about the same size case. 3 spd HD, 4 spd spur gear, 4 spd snychro'd, etc. and all were used behind the 239 ci flathead.
The EAB heads were used on 52/53 cars so they were added later if as you say the date code is 1950. Trucks normally came with 8BA or 8RT heads.
Most truck engines were red. Car engines changed multiple times. Floor shift was the norm after 1950 for 3 spd LD trans, but could have been ordered. Everything else was floor shift.
Thanks all... I'll definitely post if I decide to part out the tranny. Will probably be a while if so, as I'll want to make sure that everything bolts up fine with the existing transmission.
I do plan to open her up and see what I have, replace gaskets, etc. Figure I plan to have this truck for the rest of my life (only 31) so may as well do this stuff while the engine is already out. I do realize some parts are missing, and I'm sure trying to get this stuff will lighten my wallet. May part out the tranny to help pay for the missing pieces...
I was able to pull some codes of the tranny... 59T-7008 was on the passenger side and T-1A on the drivers side. Does this help determine what kind of tranny it is? Or is there somewhere else I should look?
The intake manifold does say 8BA. If the heads are interchangeable, I assume I could throw on the 8BA or 8RT heads to make my 53 more authentic?
... Column shift was the norm after 1950 for 3 spd LD trans, but could have been ordered. Everything else was floor shift.
Corrected above; but I didn't think you could order a floor shift LD as an option?
From what I see in the parts CD, the input shaft on a '54 L/D 3-sp is an inch longer than the ones used in 48-52's. With the different bellhousing setup for the '54, it could end up at the same place as a 48-52. BUT... there are distinct numbers for the '53 and '54 bellhousings, so I don't think a '54 Y-block bellhousing is going to adapt to a flathead V8, you'd have to get a '53 flathead bellhousing.
I was able to pull some codes of the tranny... 59T-7008 was on the passenger side and T8D-1A on the drivers side. Does this help determine what kind of tranny it is? Or is there somewhere else I should look?
No T8D listed in the '48/56 truck parts catalog. There is: T-87D = Borg Warner 3 Speed H/D Manual Transmission, 1948/56.
It's listed in the 1957/63 & 1964/72 catalogs as a H/D, was used in F350's thru 1972.
3 on the floor available 1948/50. Column shift thereafter.
Thanks Ross, that's what I meant, and you are probably right about the 3 spd LD. I always know what I mean to type, but sometimes it comes out bass-akward lol
There we go, Bill has it.
Isn't that trans known as a T9? The case should read 59T-7006 I believe.
As always, thank you all. I'll have to recheck the numbers once I can get to the engine again now that the garage is full of crap due to the coming storm.
oh, and I just found out that my father picked up the original water pumps and just didnt put them with the engine... I guess that makes up for hearing the trannys wont swap easily... nah, nevermind... grumble grumble
