I've been looking at a lot of threads, and it appears engine colors changed frequently. Can anyone tell me what color the 223 in my 56 F100 should be? It's a 1/2 ton with a 4-speed tranny. The valve cover is red but I can't find a trace of paint on the block, heads or oilpan. The transmission has so much grunge on it I feel like an archeologist digging for a find as I scrape inches of crud off.
Tony,
My '56 had a 223 in it and it was yellow. I am the third owner and the second owner said he was sure it was the original motor. I'll see if I can dig up a pic of it "as purchased."
Thanks for the photos. It's a huge help. I see the intake manifiold is painted yellow too. Was the exhaust manifold also yellow and the paint burned off or do you think it was bare steel? Also there's a 223 engine for sale on ebay right now that is yellow with a red valve cover (from a 54). My valve cover is red and after seeing your pictures I assumed it was a replacement. I did find traces of yellow paint on the bell housing, so now I'm not sure whether the yalve cover should be yellow or red.
'56 engine color is Yellow but I believe that the valve cover should be silver in color. You need to visit Earl's Page. http://www.clubfte.com/users/earl/index.html. George has a lot of information on 56 Ford. But I think it is an f-250. Hope this helps.
Tony,
Here is a page of the sales brochure on Earl's World that shows the engine as yellow and the valve cover as silver (maybe?). I don't see any paint on my exhaust manifold, but it could have been there many years ago. I can't explain why the valve cover is yellow on mine. I thought it was original and the paint color appears to be identical to the color on the block.
Do you think that ad might be depicting chrome valave covers? Or was that not an possible option in 1956? Also, I wonder if the pictue of the engine is a carry over from earlier models, because the valve cover has the breather/filler cap toward the rear instead of in the front. The same is true of the 6-cylinder engine picture in the 56 Service manual I have. But the filler cap on my and your engines are at the front of the valve cover. What did they look like in 57? The literature from that year might be more accurate for a vehicle built in 56.
The photos posted are correct. The engine block is yellow. The valve cover is silver "ardgent," and the pulleys and such are black. Since the valve cover can be mounted in either direction, I don't think it will matter which end the filler cap is on.

The valve cover isn't just flipped around, the filler cap is in a different place. In the photo, it's to the rear between the two mounting bolts. On mine and Fatfords, it's in front of the mounting bolt. So even if it was flipped around it wouldn't be in the same place.
