anyone know how to tell the diff. between a 351 and a 302 by sight or some other easy way

The upper waterpump boss is almost touching the cylinder head deck on a 302, where the 351 has the block exposed.
Here's an illustration from Franklin2.

Intake is roughly 1" wider also.

If your scouting yards, the EFI motors will have the EGR pipe coming out of the front of the passenger side manifold. Makes it easy to spot while walking by.
